Valentine... has also favored using Saltalamacchia over Shoppach a little more than most would have expected,. (b)ut while it doesn't seem to have hurt the Red Sox much yet, Salty is among the worst catchers in baseball at throwing out runners...

285 pound Adam Dunn has just stolen second off the left handed throwing Lester, with Saltalamacchia behind the plate. It is his first stolen base since 2008.

Does anyone know where I can look up team or player, inning-by-inning earned run averages? Lester gave up two in the first inning and one in the second tonight, after Beckett gave up three in the first last night and I know Dice-K has been done in by first inning scoring a few times already this year.

Not sure about by inning, but this site crunches a lot of numbers....

The Angels just may have found their "gold" tonight in Detroit. Garrett Richards is pitching yet another fine game. He could be a solid 4th or 5th starter going into October if Haren or Sanatana or anyone else is stumbling.

Baseball Reference is my go to site for anything baseball. Another great site that's Red Sox specific is sonsofsamhorn.net. The posters over there amaze me with their baseball knowledge and numbers crunching.

Much like Billy Martin, Bobby Valentine wears out his welcome quickly everywhere he goes

Valentine is not a problem. Lester and Beckett are.

Valentine has done a great job with the bullpen.

"Oh where, Oh where has our pitching gone?"

"Oh where, oh where can it be?????"

Happy ending in Beantown. Cody Ross hits a 3 run homer in the bottom of the ninth, winning the game 3-1.

Buchholz's strange season continues. He has won five games in which he gave up five or more earned runs and had three no decisions in games in which he gave up five or more earned runs, meaning he should have lost all eight of those games but lost none of them. Now, he comes off the DL and leaves his first game upon his return after 6.1 innings with two earned runs in and 2 men left on base, just because of the low arbitrary pitchcount limit and loses that, and tonight he gives up one run in eight innings and gets no decision. Strange season.

How come Youk didn't play?

There's been some absolutely horrible FA signings by the Red Sox the last few years, BUT THEN there's Cody Ross!!

Ross is producing at a rate that projects to 41 homers and 129 RBI over 162 games. Good deal for $3 million. Going into today, the Red Sox were leading the majors in runs scored, which is incredible considering Crawford and Ellsbury have each missed nearly the entire season and Pedroia and Gonzalez are having below average years.

I told you you would like him. I loved him as a Marlin and hated what the ownership did to him.

I wanted the Mets to get him when I heard he was a Free Agent. I thought he had good stats and for 3 million you could do a lot worse.

Thats the weird thing about the Red Sox. They dont have Crawford and Ellsbury for nearly the whole year and with Pedoria and Gonzalez having below average years, they still lead the majors in runs scored. The team itself isnt doing that good as they have been up and down all year.

If the Angels continue to play the way they have been since the break and Oakland continues to play the way they have been playing, the Angels will be in 3rd place in the AL West by Sunday.

Unthinkable!
