I would rather them be non-contenders for two years, then go down this road again. I have three words: develop, develop and D-E-V-E-L-O-P!!

Bill, I think I wrote that post when I was half asleep. LOL. But I dont think Red Sox fans will be patient enough to develop stars and build within. You want to talk about the Pirates or the Nats but that took years for them to develop. The Mets are trying that and my patience is running out but that is just me.

The Red Sox will develop with young blood and a new look over the next few years ala every other team that takes time to build up to future contender status with a new identity (l.e. The Reds and the Nationals of a few years ago)

Like I mentioned above, I dont think the Red Sox will wait. You dont know how long that is going to take. The talent could develop next year or 5 years. Can Red Sox Nation wait 5 years??

The Red Sox can resign Cody Ross, but might like to sign a a free agent outfielder (Josh Hamilton), a skilled catcher if Lavarnway doesn't click this September, a shortstop, and a front line starter (Jake Peavy).

They aren't really desperate at any position. They could alternate Inglesias and .350 hitting Ciriaco at short (can Ciriaco play defense at that position? I haven't really studied him there, but if he keeps hitting, I can tolerate a less-than-gold-glove shortstop), they have Kalish, Nava and .370 hitting Posednick available to play left field, and the starting rotation shapes up to be Lester, Buchholz, Doubront, De La Rosa and then maybe Morales, maybe Lackey or maybe Aceves, since the bullpen goes back to having an established closer in Bailey, set up by Melancon and Bard, and if a better catcher isn't available, then it would be Saltalamacchia and Lavarnway for now. Not that you can't improve on any of that, but it means that the Red Sox will not be forced to give big bucks to the best player available at each of those positions if the best player available isn't that much better.

Actually, they do need one more big "bopper" to replace Ortiz, or they can insult him with another one year deal.

I dont think the Red Sox go after Hamilton. I dont think Hamilton can take the pressure of Boston. I think he wants to be in a low key place and with his baggage I wouldnt blame him.

Career wise, no one is better than Pujols. But currently, Pujols is towards the end of his career and Gonzalez is now better.

Cabrera is no longer a 1st baseman. He now plays 3rd.

Votto had one of the best seasons 2 years ago. If he puts up the same numbers for another 5 years as he has done during his last 5 years, then there is no doubt Votto will be considered the best. He is younger and has much more playing years left.

So yes, I would say Gonzalez is THE best first baseman currently playing

Cabrera may not be playing first, but he really is a first baseman who happens to be playing third. Despite his slipping offense, I'd take Teixeira over all of them because of his defense. His range is enormous. The Yanks can afford his lessening bat with their lineup.

Do the Dodgers have an established starting five, or might they be tempted to give Beckett a start? At this time of year, it is not uncommon for a team to have to play a double header to make up an earlier rain-out and when they do, they often need to use a sixth starter.

They have 6 starters, but Billingsley just went back on the DL yesterday. He has been the best pitcher over the last month. Now they are back down to 5 with Beckett. When Lilly gets off the DL, they will have 7 starters.

Right now with Billingsley and Lilly on the DL, here are their starting 5:

Josh Beckett
Chris Capuano
Aaron Harang
Mike Blanton

He hits for power in a very friendly power hitting park, and cannot hit for average at all. If you want to compare defense, Gonzalez is much better than all 4 of them, IMO. Heck. if you want to talk defense, then Loney is better than all 5 of them defensively. But he will never win a GG because he does not put up the offensive numbers (yes, for some reason offense counts when determining who plays the best defense).

You are of course entitled to your opinion, but you would be one of a few that think Gonzalez is better defensively than Teixeira. Teixeira is on many all time best 1st basemen lists, I can't find Gonzalez on any of them. He is slick around the bag, but he doesn't have the range that Teixeira has. I do like his consistent bat, but we are talking defense.

Yankees are always on all time lists because they are Yankees. Players on Teams like the Padres can seldom make the same claim.


Besides, I am talking current. Teixiera is nowhere near the player he once was. He may have been the best a few years back.

More on the defense.

First base is not a defensive position anyway. Someone winning one GG after another is not as important as one putting up huge numbers (yes, Teixeira has put up huge numbers during his career)

Gonzalez has one a GG 3 of the last 4 seasons, including last year over Teixeira. So why he is not on some all time defensive list is unknown, perhaps because he hasn't won enough of them? I would be willing to bet that if he played in a larger market, he would have won even more GG earlier in his career and would then make this list.
