MLB Trade Deadline/Rumors

Wow! Good pick-up and some extra punch in that line-up.
They needed at least one or two bats for the middle of the order to bat behind Gonzalez. He may not be that true cleanup hitter they needed, but he is definitely an upgrade from what they had.

Amazing how everyone thought the Padres would be the biggest sellers, and now they are actually buyers

D'Backs Trying To Deal Jackson, Snyder

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 29 at 6:44pm CST]
The Diamondbacks are trying hard to deal Edwin Jackson and Chris Snyder without absorbing any salary, according to Bill Shaikin of the LA Times. Snyder makes $4.75MM this year ($1.8MM remains) plus $5.75 next year and either $6.75MM or a $750K buyout in 2012.
Jackson makes $4.2MM this year ($1.6MM remains) plus $8.35MM next season before hitting free agency. As Jon Heyman of SI.com pointed out on Twitter, the Nationals appear to covet Jackson, so the D'Backs will have at least one suitor for the starter. Jackson's 5.16 ERA and 13 wild pitches could scare some suitors off, but the 26-year-old can be unhittable and has had success in the American League.
The Red Sox have had interest in Snyder this year. The 29-year-old is hitting .231/.352/.426 with ten homers this year.

Ted Lilly Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes [July 29 at 6:46pm CST]
The latest on Cubs lefty Ted Lilly...
  • The Twins, who are on Lilly's no-trade list, are unlikely to acquire him, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).
  • The Mets are still engaging the Cubs about Lilly, according to Newsday's Ken Davidoff, who suggests a deal is unlikely (Twitter link).<LI id="">A Mets official told Joel Sherman of the New York Post it's "very doubtful" they acquire Lilly. The Mets do not want to take on most to all of the $4.37MM left on Lilly's contract and give up prospects too. As for Brett Myers, the Astros are "almost completely unwilling to engage in serious discussions." Sherman says the Mets might wait until August to acquire a pitcher.
  • Yesterday we learned that the Dodgers and Twins are still in on Lilly.

Astros Discussing Berkman Deals

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 29 at 5:41pm CST]
5:41pm: The White Sox consider Berkman a backup plan since they don't expect to acquire Adam Dunn, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (via Twitter).
4:14pm: The Astros are discussing possible trades involving Lance Berkman, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported this afternoon (via Twitter) that a high-ranking executive told him the Astros could move Berkman and start rebuilding.
Like former teammate Roy Oswalt, who was traded to Philadelphia earlier today, Berkman has a no-trade clause and can veto any deal. About $5.4MM remains on Berkman's $14.5MM salary this season. The Astros hold a $15MM option for next year, but they can buy it out for $2MM. Berkman is hitting .245/.372/.436 so far in 2010.

I am divided on this for the White Sox. Berkman is a better 1st basemen, but Dunn can play some outfield too.

Berkman is a better first baseman AND outfielder than Dunn. Berkman can play CF well and has speed. Berkman is just an all around better hitter and a switch hitter. Dunn will hit a lot more HRs, walk a lot more, but also strike out a lot more

I agree! :up

Dunn has more versatility, but out of these two players I'm more of a Berkman guy.
More versatility? How so? Berkman is also a better outfielder than Dunn as well.

Look at his stats. He has played the outfield more than 1st base, has a better fielding percentage at both than Dunn, and has played a full season of games in CF. Dunn cannot play CF at all

You know...I have NEVER seen him play outfield. I know he has played it, but was not sure how good he was.

Whoops!! I actually forgot that Berkman played that much in the outfield.

The only issue with Berkman is that he gets injured too much. Dunn is much more solid and more likely to play injury free than Berkman, as well as hit more HRs.

Berkman will give you better defense, more versatility, more speed, a better average, and fewer K's

I guess it will depend what the White Sox are looking for. Seeing that I like Dunn from his days as a RED, I favor towards him.

Twins Acquire Matt Capps For Wilson Ramos

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 29 at 9:26pm CST]
9:26pm: The Nationals also acquire lefty Joe Testa, according to the team (via Twitter). The Twins announced via press release that they'll receive cash in the deal.
9:10pm: The Twins acquired Capps for Ramos, according to Miller. The deal is done and will be announced tonight or tomorrow.
Ramos, 23 in August, placed 58th among all MLB prospects on Baseball America's preseason list. The catcher has hit .241/.280/.345 at Triple A with five homers this season. His offense has fallen off since last year, but Ramos has thrown out 19 of 38 would-be base stealers. Joe Mauer's presence in Minnesota made Ramos expendable for the Twins.
9:04pm: The Twins are "close" to acquiring Capps from the Nationals for Wilson Ramos, a source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter links).
8:30pm: A deal could potentially be completed tonight or tomorrow, according to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Neal hears that the Yankees, White Sox and Braves are also in on Capps.
8:25pm: The teams are in "deep discussions," according to Scott Miller of CBS Sports.
7:44pm: The Twins are discussing Matt Capps with the Nationals, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown (via Twitter). Minnesota has had interest in Capps for a while and is now more confident about acquiring a reliever than a starter, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Yesterday, Morosi reported that the Twins assigned a scout to follow Toronto's relievers, so they are clearly intent on improving their 'pen.
The Nationals are said to be asking a lot for their top players, including Capps. Scott Miller of CBS Sports reprots that the Nationals are asking for a high-level prospect in exchange for Capps. The 26-year-old has 25 saves and a 2.80 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9. He earns a base salary of $3.5MM this year ($1.3MM remains) and can be retained as an arbitration-eligible player for 2011.

I am fine with the Twins dealing Ramos. Capps will be around through next year. He is insurance for Nathan. Ramos was expendable because of Mauer and others. Ramos was unlikely to see serious action for a while.
