Motor woes

Last night, my Stab HH-90 lost its mind. It doesn't track to USALS positions anymore. It moves, albeit to the wrong sats. For instance, blind scanning 95W Ku renders me TP's from 103W. I have wiped my Amiko hd.265 twice, re-entered my coordinates (twice) to no avail. Help!

Does this seem like a receiver issue or a motor issue?

Might try using my Edision to move the dish tonight.

PS- it's about 6 degrees outside. Could the cold have anything to do with it?

Really it could be either, but I would say it is probably a sensor gone bad or too cold in the STAB.

I forgot to add, this began after I used the Disecq setting to nudge the dish a bit west on 113 for a weak TP..

Check all your coaxes, to see if they are tight, and/or got moisture in them, perhaps froze. Yes, the cold can affect the motors. I try not to move my dish when it's exceptionally cold.

Put heat tape on the motor, and let it cook for a while.

When it is about 6 degrees off, does it also go to 6 degrees from zero when you give a GotoZero or GotoRef(erence) command?

In that case the zero of your motor is off.
The fix is usually: drive the motor to zero; on the motor (does the hh90 have buttons for that?), or with GotoLeft/Right commands in your receiver.
Then give a motor Reset command from your receiver (not all receivers can do that!).
The Reset causes a the present position to be the new zero-position, and sets the GotoNn positions back to default.

If I remember right, you can NOT reset a Stab motor without a special programmer made just for them.

11.1 This function enables the rotor to return to the 0° position and to reset the inside counter. It is very important to re-align all satellite positions that can be slightly slided eastwards or westwards from the reference stored positions (bad picture or lost positions). 11.2 In the receivers' menu this function could be named as: - RE-ALIGN - RESET - GO TO POS 00 - REFERENCE. In some receivers this operation is automatic. 11.3 After this command, check if the satellite positions are correct. 11.4 If this function is not implemented in your receiver, you need to connect temporarily an interface and press the remote control buttons "FUNC and RESET".

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I'll give some of these things a try tonight. At worst, I'll just need to manually program motor location for all satellites in Disecq 1.2 until I can order the tool.

The temperature should warm up in the next few days so that might help as primestar31 said.

Thanks for the heat tape reminder. I forgot to plug in the tape on the water softener pipes in my garage.

When the motor does go to a fixed position, not zero, on the command GotoZero/GotoRef, only then a Reset is needed.

BTW The reset command is just a diseqc command, that can be given as a 'raw diseqc command', IIRC. I believe many PC-card receivers could manage that.

Correct. Tuning 103 on "95" would mean my motor is off by 8 degrees

My guess is the voltage to the motor dropped too low at some point perhaps due to the cold, a poor/loose connection or some other reason.

What A33 suggests above always fixes my motor when it goes insane. But I do have a reset procedure for my SG-2100 motor. It involves pressing a physical button on the motor. Once reset, USALS works and I then use diseqc commands to save the very best position for each satellite.

If a motor can't be reset, I'd hesitate to buy it.

It was the cold. Came home from work, fired up the Amiko, told the motor to go to 103 and boom, it went. I now know not to try moving the dish in extreme cold.
