Trevor Ariza's short but sweet stay in Los Angeles might be coming to an end.
The 24-year-old swingman, who played a key role in the Lakers' run to their 15th NBA championship, is on the verge of leaving the club, sources close to the situation said on Wednesday.
With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.
Cleveland is making a hard push for Ariza, and the Cavaliers' coaching staff was speaking with him on Wednesday. While Cleveland can only offer the mid-level as well, Ariza's disappointment with the Lakers' stance has moved other suitors ahead of his current team.

The New York Knicks, meanwhile, have readied their own offer to Kidd to match the Dallas contract ... at least in length.
Sources close to the process told ESPN.com on Wednesday night that Knicks president Donnie Walsh has decided that he will indeed make a three-year offer to Kidd, even though having such an offer accepted would almost certainly slice into some of New York's projected salary-cap space for the highly anticipated free-agent bonanza in the summer of 2010.

The team agreed to trade power forward Zach Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies for swingman Quentin Richardson, sources told ESPN.com's Chad Ford. The deal was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.
The trade can't be finalized until the league establishes the salary cap July 8 and lifts the moratorium on player movement.
The Clippers acquired Randolph from the Knicks last November to fill the void left by Elton Brand signing with the Sixers. Randolph averaged 20.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest in 39 games for Los Angeles. A knee injury cost him time, however, and the Clippers limped to the worst record in the league.
On draft night, the Knicks traded Richardson to the Grizzlies for center Darko Milicic. Richardson won't play a game for Memphis. The nine-year veteran averaged 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds last season. He now returns to the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2000 draft.
Woah. Two great moves by the Pistons. They had the money and they most certainly aren't afraid to spend it. So much for "rebuilding." These Pistons want to compete NOW!
BTW Pistons fans, which of your players won't be returning this year? There's rumors that Sheed and Dyess won't be coming back, is this true?
Rasheed Wallace will probably not be back, not sure about McDyess. Of the two, I would rather have McDyess back. At least he tried last season. 'Sheed is rumored to be going to San Antonio.
I like both of the moves made yesterday by Dumars. Gordon brings 20 pts. a game and doesn't mind coming off the bench. Can you say Vinnie Johnson? Villanueva is an upcoming player. 16 pts. and about 7 boards per game, and he only played 26 minutes a game last season. I can see those numbers expanding when he gets 40 minutes per game here.
We still need a center. Tyson Chandler, Chris Kaman are available, and I'll bet that Utah may be open to some discussion about one of their big men. They may not be able to afford all three. (Boozer, Okur, Millsap).

ESPN is reporting that Ron Artest will sign with the Lakers.
The Celtics have offered Rasheed Wallace a contract using their mid-level exception, according to Marc Spears of the Boston Globe. The contract was reportedly offered during a three-hour meeting in which Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Doc Rivers, Danny Ainge, and Wyc Grousbeck traveled to Detroit.
Bill, do YOU think Rasheed would be a good signing for the C's?
I'm worried that a Celtics team with Rasheed AND Stephon Marbury could be a recipe for disaster.
We all remember what happened with the Cowboys when they signed troubled players in Pacman and T.O.; I fear this could be a bad fit.
Why not a good thing? I think it is great, and a huge improvement for us over Ariza. If Phil Jackson can keep Dennis Rodman in check, then Ron Artest will be a walk in the park.Two things:
1. I don't have a good feeling about this.
2. I honestly thought he'd want to stay in Houston. With the uncertain futures of T-Mac and Yao, he would have made a great team stabilizer.
