NCAA Football OffSeason 2014

National Signing Day is always a crap shoot. Considering the black cloud over The U over the last 3 years, they recruited well according to Scouts.com ...do not use and never went by ESPNs ranking. I am excited for the football season.

I thought there were rules about how many recruits you could sign ?

That is true, but it is limited to the academic year, which gives schools some leeway with early enrollment as long as their total number of scholarship players does not exceed the limit, which I think is 85.

Plus ones that have left early or quit school.

There are rules but if you find out the details you'll find that Tennessee had some scholarships left over from last and they were also able to pull some other strings in order to get the number they did.

Interesting story locally, recent Michigan State recruit wants to go to MSU, 5 star recruit though mom wants not nothing to do with MSU, goes on local radio, newspapers and really embarrass herself. The kid does declare MSU, dad is not custodial thus it's not official yet as mom won't sign. There are ways to get around it without moms signature but wow has this been a circus

As long as she has full custody, the only way around Mom's signature is him turning 18. So all he, and Michigan St, have to do is wait until his birthday, he'll still be there in the fall.

Can't beat them, change the rules

http://www.ajc.com/ap/ap/sports/bielema-saban-supported-slow-down-rule-proposal/ndNjK/

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema and Alabama coach Nick Saban voiced their concerns about the effects of up-tempo, no-huddle offenses on player safety to the NCAA committee that passed a proposal to slow down those attacks.

Neither Bielema nor Saban were on the committee and they did not vote on the proposal passed Wednesday to allow defenses time to substitute between plays by prohibiting offenses from snapping the ball until 29 seconds are left on the 40-second play clock.

...

Plenty of coaches have made it known they are not happy with the proposal, especially those such as Auburn's Gus Malzahn, Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury, Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin and Arizona's Rich Rodriguez who run fast-paced offenses.
Interesting how the last 3 teams to beat Saban all make use of the hurry up offense that he wants to ban. :D

Not far away from just throwing the pads away and breaking out the flags
The real reason has nothing to do with safty, but all to do with a coach that likes to frequently substitute players based on the circumstances.

Hurry up offenses have been around in the NFL and NCAA for a long time, no need to ban them now. That's why you have a week of practice, to prepare.

How exactly is a hurry up supposed to cause more injuries anyway? If it does, then the coach needs to look at his conditioning program.

So an eight game schedule is still the norm, not surprising. However they upped the ante. Now each school will be required to schedule one game a season against a school from a competing power conference.

Of course most of our schools do that already, but good to see it as required and bravo to the sec for trying to get some inter conference scheduling become more common.

Hey Texas, the door is open. Yall scared?

Basically they changed nothing. And ironically they probably set a min. as the like of Florida and Georgia will now way they already have a major school on the schedule and even less often schedule a second.

Plus those without an annual ACC matchup will be knocking on the doors of Wake Forest and Northwestern to get that "major" OOC matchup.

And what happens if those other conferences don't open up an annual window for them, since 3 of them already are going to a 9 game schedule? Will they just do an alliance with the ACC like the Pac12 & Big Ten toyed with, since they're the only 2 left with an 8 game schedule (thought the ACC is really 8.5 with Notre Dame)?

What's funny, is Vandy already had an annual ACC end of year matchup against Wake, but the SEC & ACC messed that up when they forced Vandy to play Tenn at the end of the year along with UK & Louisville.

It doesn't have to be ACC , it has to be from there, the big 10, big 12, or the PAC 12.

Opens up the door for Texas/am. If Texas will quit being a child about the situation.

The Bigs and Pac have a 9 game schedule, which make scheduling opportunities with them harder, especially on an annual basis.

And with Mazeil gone, and A&M headed back towards Kentuckydom in football, Texas has little incentive to play them.

We will see. Many of our schools were already scheduling these opponents, but i honestly prefer this method to a nine game conference schedule.

It at the least opens the door to a more varied schedule.
