I am new to this forum and know very little about satellite systems so bare with me please. We have an 8 foot dish with an old Drake ESR1624 receiver. The system worked well when we first moved in, it was all left by the previous homeowner, shortly after it stopped working. I took the receiver to a shop and they hooked it up to their dish and said there was nothing wrong with the box they suggested bring the feedhorn in which I did and they said that was fine. Then they said I probably have a break in the wire somewhere. We didnt try any further to make it work now I'm wondering with the digital conversion looming if there is any hope of this system working again. Is it worth investing in is there some kind of conversion kit I hate to just throw it all away. Thanks any input would be appreciated

welcome :wave

Sounds like you have a good system that probably just has something simple wrong. The digital conversion has nothing to do with Free to air, just over the air TV. So you're good there

What do you mean by "it stopped working"? No channels? Dish wont move?

Analog doesnt have many channels left. They really have gone to digital. So you would need a free to air receiver to enjoy more of what you have.

Is it possible to take some pictures so we can help a little more?

So the dish will pick up digital signals but I need a receiver to do it? The old analog receiver is junk? Pictures maybe tomorrow its dark now

If it's wired correctly... and it's aimed correctly... then the old analog receiver should move the dish from bird to bird, and adjust your polarity servo (blue box at the feedhorn).

First step might be to get some of the remaining analog signals, as proof-of-concept.
Then, you might learn about the digital or DVB receivers we all use, and consider buying one of them.

One way to hook 'em up, would be to let the old receiver do all the controlling and the new receiver be a slave.
There are other more advanced hookups, where you throw out the analog receiver, but let's walk before we run. :)

We look forward to your pictures.

mike look at our sponsors websites, they are listed at the top of the page (i.e. Sadoun, SatelliteAV, etc) They sell receivers and lots more. You can pick up a good receiver that will
pick up the digital signals from your big dish, a C-note or so will get a good basic receiver. Post here if you find one that looks interesting, most of us have more than one rec and have experience with most of what's avail right now, somebody will give you some feedback on it.
