New Box

It would be the ultimate device if it had all the channels with at least the best HD quality and accessible cloud time shifting of all channels 24/7 for say a month or more.

ATT/Directv should do what they are doing for their internet modem/routers that are capable of accepting a fiber or standard uverse DSL connection.

Make 1 set top box with an eithernet and satellite input.

Make it so the box uses the satellite as the primary connection and has streaming capability.

You either use the box with the satellite connection or the internet connection for streaming content.

If you hook up both connections the system works off satellite, and if you loose satellite signal then it goes to the broadband streaming connection.

The only thing Directv needs to do in their set top box is change the software they use for streaming and go more towards the technology Netflix uses as it works better at lower bandwidth

interesting
i see this more as a directv now box

no sat, not really directv
Don't think it's any of the above folks ...

As slice1900 on dbstalk notes, the Variety author has it all wrong.

The C71KW is not an OTT streaming box at all. But a new 4K wireless Genie client that apparently includes Android software so the apps are installed, maintained, and run locally on the client itself instead of the server.

And seems to be for a future "HS27" headless server.

the manual specifically calls it an OTT box, see page 4
but it also has wvb network capability

there is also no mention of pairing it to a genie in the manual

that could all come later when the hs27 comes out

only time will tell

random thought

maybe they are intending the new hs27 to be a home server accessed via your network (wired or wireless), and ditching the coax to each receiver.

throw an rvu app on this thing and it becomes a directv box

maybe even the ability to connect to your home via vpn from any location?

What about merging the UVerse Gateway and the headless server into one unit? I can see advantages to this however if the whole unit breaks then you couldn't watch TV or surf the web.

Or what about a hybrid server that runs DTV, UVerseTV, DTV Now and outputs to 4k over HDMI?

That's already the case with the HS17.
