Hello all,

My lovely bride just presented me with a gift from Sadoun, she got me their S-1 FTA-Mercury II Choice Set and I plan to install it this weekend. She said she got it for me since I'm such a tech freak, ya gotta love that!

Until she bought this for me I had no idea about FTA, and am still a bit confused, but I look forward to trying it out. I did a web search and found all of you and figured you could help with my main issue.

I guess the biggest concern I have is my son. After looking at the channel listings they all look pretty much inert, but are there any channels that could pose an issue for a 10 year old? He is a VERY curious kid and loves tinkering with my electronic stuff.

Do we need to worry about porn or any extremely graphic content if he "surfs" through the channels?

This model is stationary and I plan to mount it on the roof so he won't be able to go from bird to bird without my knowledge.

Thanks from Dallas,

Carl

I really doubt you're going to run across anything more inappropriate than something like Jerry Springer. Can't say I've really ran across anything at all like that, most of the stuff is just fine. Of course right now I have a fixed dish on Galaxy 18 which I'm more than happy with. Soon will be adding a motor. But to answer your question, I highly doubt you need to worry. Worst thing he may do is mess up your channel guide or overwrite something by trying a scan, but that's easily fixable.
Don't have a mercury, I have a coolsat, but I know I can set locks on mine. To get into any of the channel scan/memory/menu items you have to unlock it first. Check to see if yours has a lock on it too, may save you some hassle, but I really think you're good.
Good luck with the install. Personally I'd recommend a pole vs the roof unless you really have a lot of trees. Easier to mess with if you have to and no strain from a big dish on your roof.

BTW: Kudos to the wife, that's awesome!!

I don't think there is a single channel that would be a problem on the FTA satellites. In fact, the programming on average is probably more wholesome than watching current network prime time offerings. Galaxy 18 , 123W, the the home of Equity broadcasting, whose RTN network affiliates broadcast a lot of the "oldies, but goodies" TV series, like Gomer Pyle, Get Smart, Ironsides, Mission Impossible, etc . Probably the best single satellite for a stationary mount IS Galaxy 18 at 123W. You can expect plenty of suggestions and help as you need it.
:)

Sounds great then! Thanks you 2.

I'll probably be putting it up tomorrow starting about noon 30 or so.

When you say 123W what exactly does that mean? 123 degrees west? I know, noob in the house! LOL

We often talk of satellites by their orbital location. Galaxy 18 is in orbit at 123W longitude.
Here's a link to one of our resources, Lyngsat.
North & South America - LyngSat . In case you don't know, Sadoun has some great installation aids on their website, including instructions and calculators for dish elevation, azimuth , and lnb skew .

:)

Welcome!!

You will like the Merc II, I have one, it is a good box. Might I suggest a pole mount? If you motorize later, way easier, no ladders, no holes in your roof.

If you have to roof mount, mount low on the NORTH side near the eave. It will shoot over the roof and allow you to aim it from the ladder.

Google lyngsat for all the varoius sats up there.

123W is 123 degrees west of Greenwich, England

Read everything you can, starting with the FAQ section here.

worst thing I guess he could see is on Univision (Spanish channel). They seem to be a little different on there

but other than that (or Fashion TV on G25) there is no porn on KU Band

I think this is the first time I've ever read about someone being introduced to FTA by their wife, that's awesome! Usually its the other way around, and the guys have to get their wives interested in FTA first :)

I haven't visited 43.0°W Intelsat 3R Ku lately, but at times there has been some stuff on a Italian channel in the past I would rate R+... i.e. some show going around to different strip clubs, 30 minute infomercials for dial-in "talk"...in US they keep their clothes on, not there.

I agree with Concord from the fact that different countries have different rules. In Canada they sometimes show stuff on OTA television that would never pass the FCC rules in the States. If you have the menus locked out with a password then only the channels you have set up will be available for your children to watch. It is probably easier than allowing sites on the net that your children could access, but since I have no children this is just a guess on my part. If in doubt lock out all foreign channels. BTW there are no Canadian channels FTA on ku band, but FTV (from France, English language) on G25 has seminude models (see through clothed models) sometimes.

I'm sorry I can't help with the phone number, but would suggest that you ask us to "PM" you with an answer and not post your email in a public forum? I know I wouldn't..!! If it's OK for you, it's OK with me...! But, I wouldn't...!!

one question:

... She said she got it for me since I'm such a tech freak, ya gotta love that!
. . .

Thanks from Dallas,

Carl
. . . and that question is: Does she have a sister???

I was about to say something about what birds you'd even be able to see from your location, but after putting your city into a sat finder program, you really do have a good view to the east! - :up
Hispasat at 30° West would be around 10 or 11 degrees elevation for you.
Not that you'd necessarily want it... but ya might, when you find out what it's got.
I can't even get it from here on the west coast.

I see a motor in your future.
So, be sure to find a good place in your back yard for the dish.
Climbing on a roof is no way to get introduced to FTA, nor especially to motors!
