OFFICIAL External Storage Information

I called from the office, no chance to go home yet... The CSR I got was really nice, knew what I wanted, but had not done it yet. He did not know the right codes etc and had to ask for help. I was on hold for about 3 mins and he comes back and says, OK, you're all set. I actually didn't understand that he had done it already and was waiting for more when he says "Anything else I can help you with?" Oh you're done? LOL.

I asked about trading out the old 622 for the new one and he said I would not have to re-activate the new one. It should be all set once I fire it up and getting it going. Looking forward to doing this tonight.

I'm also curious about the idea of reformatting the drive back to NTFS when I'm done and seing if the 3 swaps thing is erased also. I'm going to reformat back to NTFS anyway cause I want the HDD on my PC not my Dish. Still curious though.

I called twice this morning and both reps said to call back at 8:00am Eastern as they could not activate until then. About 7:30 I called again and this time they got me going. I came back this afternoon and decided to archive several HD movies including King Kong, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean. The screen showed I had 239 gb of storage available and my transfer would take 53 gigs. First, the screen noted a time required for download of 3 hours and some odd minutes but a moment later it switched to 2 hours 47 minutes. It has been 20 minutes into the process now and I just went to check the status bar. It says it is sending my selections to the hard drive but there is no green status bar showing nor is there any time remaining. I know the transfer is not complete but it looks like you have to wait until the hard drive itself stops blinking to know the downloads have in fact taken place. Perhaps too much content thrown at it at once messes up the status indicators. I hope so because we really have to know how much time is left and the status of the download. I'm just going to keep going until I see my WD stop blinking and then see what is on it.

I saw the same issue with the status bar disappearing after you check a few times. It won't come back during this transfer but you will get the popup that says it's done.

Thats good to know but not good enough. I think we need a status bar that works throughout the entire duration of the download.

This is what has been going on for months with my PocketDish. The difference is that when I plugged in my PD the download would freeze the screen. If the download was half way done and there was 1 hour and 20 minutes (for example) left showing on the status bar, that is where it stayed and you could not operate any part of the 622 receiver at all. There would be nothing left to do but a soft reboot. Sometimes the download would take and sometimes not.

Someone posted that the PD issue as been resolved and I am anxious to check mine; however, we can not have a status bar that either sticks in one place or shows nothing at all, as is the case now with the external hard drive. They'll have to work this out.

So far I've made two attempts to transfer to the external drive and both times after just a few minutes the 622 rebooted causing the the transfer to abort.

Been running about thirty minutes now, warm but not uncomfortable to the touch. Actually, maybe slightly cooler than the 622 right next to it. Unit is sitting in an open area of the shelf, lots of air circulation, and there is an a/c vent about 18" above it. So, even if it hits 100 again here in SoCal, should be nice and comfy up there.

I'm running a Hitachi 500GB Deskstar T7K500 HDT725050VLA360 in the below fanless case,

USB Storage
USB Storage

and the temp runs about 35-41C when measured on the case with an infrared thermometer and a few degrees warmer when measured on the drive itself.

Noise is a non-issue, the 622 is far more noisy than the ext HDD, can't really even hear the drive when placed next to the 622.

no problem's yet ?

Hooked up to new seagate f a 500 and started transfering almost everthing to it, my 622 was just about full, status bar said it would take about 11 hours. just checked and the green bar is almost halfway and says about 5hrs left. It at first did not want to format when I first plugged it in after I called to activate it, but then it did and said it failed-- the 3rd time it formated, but still said I had to call to activate:confused: I rebooted and all was well, anyway it seems to be working properly now , I'll see in about 5 hrs:eureka

I activated, took 2 minutes, also got the credit for the lan ports being hooked up on both my recievers. I have lots of external drives but they are all in use, so I decided to "test" out a configuration. Works great :)
See attached

My average is 3mins per 30 mins of SD content.

Got home from work and called Dish to activate the storage option. The rep I spoke to knew exactly what to do and I was off of the phone in about 30 seconds. This was a very smooth and painless process. Started transfering about 100 GB of programs and cracked open a beer. Might need a few since it said it would take about 7 hours to complete. Very happy so far.

Thanks Dish!

When I tried to manage device the second time on my 2nd 622 and Seagate Freeagent 500 GB, It showed an empty drive . I had to select it again to see the 2 programs I had sent. As mentioned before my 1st 622 did not recognize my freeagent on second use and said it was a device formated for another receiver; reformated it; and wiped it clean. This feature is definately not bug free. I hope it settles down soon.

I just tried a restore of a 1 hour 7 GB HD program. IT worked fine and took 1/2 the 33 minutes the 622 said it would take. Interesting it did not erase the program from the external drive. Had to use the delete fnctn to do that.

Well, I'm replying to my own post. An update: I just checked again and now I do have the green status bar and time remaining showing again. I guess it comes on and off.

Two questions come to mind. Will it take just as long to transfer back to the 622 if we wish as it does to download from it? And second, would the download process go faster perhaps if one did not choose to "view tv" during the download? My guess to each is yes but I'm not sure.

Some oddball behavior with the external storage

I've been trying to transfer some stuff over to my external hard drive and have had a couple of odd-ball thing happen.

1. Sometimes after I tell it I want to view TV for a while and go back to check the status, it shows blank for "Estimated time remaining", and the progress bar is missing. If I look at the USB drive, it is still being written to, though.

2. When I had told it to copy a bunch of stuff (time estimate was around 8 hours), about half way through it just stopped, and I had to program it to copy the stuff it didn't copy.

3. While copying a program and watching a TV program from the internal hard drive, right at 5:00 pm, the receiver just up and rebooted. I had to start the copy over again, and start the program I was watching again.

Anyone else having these issues?

Thanks.

Sean Dudley

Sean, I am in the middle of a transfer right now and when checking the progress from live tv I also get the blank time and status bar.

After a glitch with getting it set up last night (I called at midnight), I called Dish today and the first rep I spoke with didn't have a clue. I hung up and the second rep said she hadn't gotten calls yet but her whole attitude was great and I stayed with her as she got through reading the materials. She got me set up. I transferred a 4 hour Seahawks/Chargers preseason game to my western digital 500gb hdd (WDG1U5000N) and then viewed it. Looked just as good after the transfer. Very happy. Adding in the new channels this is a great day.

I had no problems at all this morning when I called the number on the receiver around 7:30central time. I got an AMERICAN woman named Donna just like my wife. She said no problem and said there would be a 39.99 fee for enabeling the hard drive access and that it would take around 15 minutes to see it. It took less than 5 minutes and one reboot on my second 622 ,but it worked just fine and now have no movies on my internal hard drive . Haven't seen that in a while. My second dvr has all the PORN recordings now on my external HARD drive-no pun intended. Now my kid has only his kiddie recordings grouped in folders. It looks very good. LOVE The external hard drive and can't wait to hook up my new 722 when it gets here Monday.
