It may just be wishful thinking on my part but is a tuner card for your PC an option any time soon. D* could sell the card and necessary software and you could then build your own dvr or multi-room video pc. It would likely be a niche market for tech geeks but it would seem like it would be a way for you to have a customizable system and would be cheaper for d* because they wouldn't have to build or upgrade then lease new boxes.
 
ATi has been making Tuner cards since the 486Dx33... Run a Rec into the tuner and run your own DVR software. no big deal, but not as cost effective as having a DBS DVR or a Tivo aside from being able to rip the movies to a DVD but a $99 DVD burner can do that w/o tying up your 'puter.
