Not necessary anymore, unless you want the Caller Id feature on it, otherwise, No.

don't forget if you want to order pay per view through the receiver, if you want to order pay per view without the phone line, you'll have to call directv or order online.

I find Online to be the easiest way !

Same here, and if you order online you get to watch it on every receiver, I don't' think you can do that if you order by phone or with the remote.

With the remote you only get the one rec. it's ordered with, on the phone can be all if you tell them, there is also a fee for ordering on the phone.
