I have tried using the programmer planner for timer recordings and it does work. The problem is that the channel does not change until after the program has already started. Is there any way to adjust the clock a tad earlier?

Unfortunately, no. The only foolproof way I've found to do this is to use the internal clock on your recorder, and have the TV set off, and the last channel watched is the one that you want to record. Either that, or stay up and watch the show while you record it. If you use Voom's program planner, then you are at the mercy of Voom's clock, and you risk missing the start of the program.
