Excuse me for putting this question here, but I initially placed it in the DirecTV HD DVR Forum and in several weeks, no-one has responded.

A technical question:

If I replace my MPEG2 HD-DVR with an MPEG4 HD-DVR, can I still hook my MPEG2 DVR directly to my TV and access the HD content recorded on it?

What do you think?

Thanks

Um, you would have to keep the mpeg 2 tivo dvr activated through directv to use both at the same time, unless you hack it and get the programs off of the mpeg 2 hard drive onto your computer's hard drive.

But that's not a problem you need to worry about for a long time, as the new dvr will be out january the earliest.

Try this. Unhook the cable from the satellite dish to your MPEG2 DVR. Try to play what you have recorded on your TV. I think it will work.

any tivo will still play your previously recorded shows even if you cancel service. I'm doing this now with an old sony tivo. You just have to hit tivo to get off the one screen when it boots up and looks for a signal.
