I was trained to add extra cable on the run from the dish (50,75,100 feet) whatever needed to attenuate the signal to ensure the signal level numbers are in the correct range to ensure a proper install.

Here's my question...

Can i add an attenuator/filter to my line to accomplish the same goal? Are there any reasons they shouldn't be used on a DirecTV system?

That would seem awfully odd, seeing you start with a 21v power insertor and go up from there and most installs are 50 ft or shorter (not all mind you, but your told the shorter the better. If its to long, you move up to the 29v version.

Keep in mind, the OP never said he was working on a D* set up.
