Hopefully Dish will not shoot themselves in the foot again! I can see Dish going the same direction as terrible "Turbo HD" for NEW customers only with this promotion. Dish network, either give ALL of your customers the same deal or don't offer it at all. The best way to attract new customers is introductory pricing that expires in 6-12 months.....not by giving your loyal customer base the shaft.

Seems my idea that I suggested to DISH for "Free HD" is catching on. All your hd channels that come in your basic packs are essentially free . You only pay for the hd channels in the platinum pack with no sd equivalent. The only catch is that you have to take the platinum pack at $10.00 to get the "free " hd channels in your pack. This proves what I was saying that basic hd channels in the programming packs are no more expensive than the sd channels . There were not enough channels in the platinum pack that were any real interest to justify the extra $10.00 a month. So DISH was not making any money off of these channels and no one was watching them . Now more people will be subscribing to them since they will come with any basic hd pack anyway. This is great for DISH to be able to advertise this as an advantage over DIRECTV. Also great for the subscriber; more hd channels for less money , A price decrease so to speak.:D

I said this in the retailer chat thread.

Why don't we organize a campaign to write to CEO about this starting now?

My experience with DISH is you have to ask for it, they wont just give it to you.

They already announced their intention to give new subscribers and "new to HD" subscribers more than they give to existing subs.

Once again the newbies get a deal and the loyal customers get the shaft.

I'll start by sending in my email to CEO asking about if current HD subscribers will be getting this deal or not.

I'll post any response I get from them for everyone to see.

It wouldn't be this board unless everyone was upset about something that hasn't even happened.

Call August 1st. Ask for the "HD & Platinum" package. Confirm that it's $10. Problem solved. If that doesn't do the trick, I will be raising hell louder than any of you.

I already laid out what I think is happening on the other thread, but...when they say that all new HD customers will get that package, I'm pretty sure that means that the CURRENT HD options will no longer be available. If you do not currently subscribe to Platinum, you may be able to get something for free for a while, but you'll be setting yourself up for a price increase down the line. If you don't care about the Platinum channels at any price, I'd stay grandfathered in if I were you.

As a reluctant Platinum subscriber (mainly for HDNET Movie), I will be logging in to check my account on August 1st and figuring out where to take it from there.

Off Topic quick question: Scott do you know if Dish Network
is going to carry the New Premium Movie Channel Epix from Viacom and Lions Gate?

I hear what you are saying regarding your theory on what this may mean in the future. But lets be realistic, price increases are coming regardless of what they decide to do with the HD packages.

My only point is you, me or any one else should not have to call and ask for what they are giving to the new guy that just signed up and has not paid them thousands of dollars over the course of many years.

I personally don't subscribe to platinum anymore because for $10 it was not worth it. But for free it is worth every penny....

The HD Add-on packages (regardless of what they are calling them) are almost all profit, as is Platinum. There should be no price increases for the forseeible future...if anything, market forces should drive the price down. Which, technically speaking, this IS a price decrease.

But you KNOW a bunch of people will jump to get "free" channels, and then cry foul when the price goes up and they don't have the option to dump them anymore.

BTW...the extreme cynical view is that Platinum did it's job...to get rid of Voom...and now it's time to retire it.

First of all, nothing's happened yet. But I don't agree. Assuming I'm anywhere close to correct about what they are doing (and it's not too hard to figure out) you, as a non-platinum subscriber should have the option to stay where you are at. And what if I had been considering dropping Platinum (as I have several times), and called on August 2nd, only to find out I had been switched. I might be happy right now, but not next year if it goes up to $15 and only the grandfathered accounts can get $10 HD.

No one should be forced away from a grandfathered package. As long as they let their customers know what is going on (Fliers and e-mails that say "Call now, save up to $10 a month!") I don't think they SHOULD change anything automatically. I mean, if they do it to me, I'll be happy. But next Feb is going to suck when everyone starts whining that they were "tricked".

I could be completely wrong. We'll see.
