What is the power button for?

Even when you turn off the HR20, the fan/hard drive is still spinning and noisy as ever. The manual says the DVR will continue to record programs even with the power off. So what is the purpose, other than giving you a blank screen on your tv?

So as a related question. Is there any way to turn off the fans/hard drive so that it's not so noisy at night?

The only way, I know of is to pull the plug. But then that forces a reboot when you plug it back in.

And finally.... If I were to pull the plug each night and turn it back on in the morning. Will this process eventually damage the DVR?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

So called "powering down" allows the device to go into standby mode which lets the hard drive spin down, and lets the unit install software updates among other things.

By unplugging the unit you are forcing a reboot of the device, cutting power to the cooling fans and killing its ablility to record shows.
