RayBan Meta Glasses and Display 2025

Broadening the scope of the thread to other options- The Rokid uses a two eye display. But as I use my Rayban Meta glasses mostly for video recording the Rokid turn off was it has poor image stabilization. I question the ability to focus at close range and distant at the same time.

Before RayBan Meta, I had some video recording glasses that would record in 4K and no image stabilization and it was a labor intensive job to fix the video. I had to buy these through Temu out of China but they only cost $70. The Meta Display are $860 with the tax so I certainly will test in the store before buying. I understand Best Buy and others will have them for sale too.

Rokid testing. This guy, Steven seems to be shilling for Rokid because they gave him a pair to play with. It's also a Kick Starter pre-purchase which is a huge negative for me because I got scammed years ago by a company who pushed a great 3D camera but after taking the money closed up shop and disappeared. The shills back then pushed the product and also disappeared when the company disappeared.

I think waiting until they actually work would be a better idea. That demo was laughable... ;)
True! But keep in mind this is a new technology in development. I admit I'm a sucker for new technology but I try to do my homework before purchasing except when the price is really low, I take the risk.

The Mark Zuckerberg Live demo was risky and gutsy but these are never a good idea. Apple learned the hard way as did Tesla with the Cybertruck window smashing.

I always appreciated Mark's willingness to take on new ideas. I became a fan, not because of Facebook but that he put his money behind Oculus. I owned the Oculus Rift, the Quest 1, and 2. And the Meta Quest 3 which is the best on the market, does far more than the Apple Vision Pro, and has the same quality now with the latest upgrade. I sat through the Apple demo for 45 minutes and said no way! My Meta Quest 3 runs rings around the AVP. Maybe one day they will do it right but for now, Meta is the top spot so the glasses looks to be the best technology has to offer now.

Saw his review. He is usually pretty honest.

The full color camera monitoring is nice, for sure. From my experience having the camera off to the side is a problem with framing the shot. I have gotten used to it. But better to be able to see it in your lens. The bracelet to navigate is interesting but I'm not sure I would use it that much.

Sure wish Meta would compete with at least a 10 minute record time as opposed to 3 minutes. That is a software update as they already upgraded my gen 2 glasses from 1 minute to 3 minutes. However, what I noticed and no one is reporting is if I record outside in the summer heat, 4 -3 minute clips in a row the glasses overheat and shut down with a verbal notice. It takes about 20 minutes to recover and turn on again. So the 3 minute timer is probably a way to check the temperature problem.

The competition (Rokid) has a 10 minute time limit but no reviewers have reported overheating problems. Reminder Rokid has only "paid" reviewers with free glasses as they are still just a Kick Starter. Currently the price with coupon code is $479. Rokid also claims to have quite a few better features over the Meta Displays but already they have been exposed to lying about the apps. They sold the first KS investors on "free" but now they admit it will be subscription. Like if you already subscribe to ChatGPT, to use your subscription on the glasses you will be charged again for it. Also, it was leaked by one reviewer that Rokid phone app is Android only but they said it will be iOS soon.

I understand that Rokid claims they meet their goals in Kick Starter the price will be the same as others or $599+

I just ordered the upgrade to the Gen 2 which has 3K video and longer battery life.

I also have an appointment to get a demo of the Meta Display glasses next week. If I am impressed with the performance I will make the purchase. Call me an early adopter sucker if you want but I am fascinated with the wrist band and full color display of what I am photographing.

There is a problem with the technology they chose in the display and it is not the monocular but rather if you need prescription lenses you must get them from Rayban for the Display to work. Snap in after market Rx Lenses that are low cost do not work. The lenses are special and a part of the display system. The lens is not curved but flat and has special prisms embedded in the lower right side. I suppose you could have prescription clip on made for the front so as not to mess with the display. Haven't seen any offerings yet for clip ons. Otherwise, pay the premium price for Meta to make your Rx lenses installed. I'm fortunate in that I don't need Rx yet except for reading and even then its only for the very fine print. However, my wife would need Rx for distance. Wearing contact lenses may be the easy solution.

I got the new RayBan Meta Gen 2 in yesterday. Got a discount on them with a coupon too and they arrived with green sunglass lenses. I never liked green sunglasses. So I popped them out and inserted my Xtra Active transition lenses. Easy enough to do. Haven't tested the battery life yet but did do a video quality check. Image stabilization is equal to the Gen 1 which has been very good. The detail seemed the same but color saturation slightly better.
I then switched them to 3K resolution but the downside was the record time lasted only 92 seconds. In 1080P the record time is 3 minutes. The settings still list 3 minutes as the recording time but in "High Resolution" it notes it affects "battery life, storage, recording duration and stabilization options."
That was not stated in the advertising specs. On three test recordings in 3K the recording time was around 90 seconds. My intended use will be recording walking around as a tourist so I may stick to 1080P 30fps and upconvert in editing. That worked in Gen 1 satisfactory. So this was a disappointment for the 3K high resolution recording. Comparing to Gen1 the detail does appear to be higher in the Gen 2 but I'll do some resolution chart tests later to measure any difference.
Image stabilization is the same and no difference in 3K mode.
The AI doesn't appear to be any better than Gen 1. Response time is about the same.

Conclusion- The Gen 1 Rayban Meta Wayfarer with clear lenses can be had now for as low as $199 with coupons and refurb, normally $279 - $299 on Amazon. The Gen 2 sells for $379 new. You decide if longer battery life and 3K recording is important to spend the extra $100 if you were planning to buy these.

The AI capability of these is amazingly good and like all AI apps the accuracy is dependent on how you ask the question. With these glasses all you do is ask, "Hey Meta", (wait for the beep) then say "what am I looking at?" Meta will answer in your ear. Next you can ask for more details. The camera isn't on all the time so waiting for the beep gives the glasses time to turn on the camera to see what you are looking at. The response is pretty quick.

I have tested a number of cheap camera glasses even with 4K video and what they call image stabilization and they all suck. The Meta glasses both Gen 1 and Gen 2 are far superior and produce image quality equal to my iphones including the 17Pro. All those cheap camera glasses were a waste of money. The RayBan Meta's are worth the higher price. I look forward to getting the Display glasses next.

Did some real world battery run time for video recording. While it is not critical to have extended battery as there are options to plug these glasses into a power bank or your iphone while wearing them and that will last all day but if wanting not to be tethered with a charging wire to your glasses, knowing how much time you get is important.

Testing Battery for video recording time where the clips were restarted with little to no break between them:
Gen 1 1080P30 : 100% to 11% recording in nine 3 minute clips. Total 27 minutes
Gen 2 1080P30: 100% to 15% recording in twelve 3minute clips. Total 36 minutes
Gen 2 3K 30 : 100% to 72% recording in five 3 minute clips. Total 15 minutes
Note- The second Gen 2 at 3K shut down due to Camera overheating. I could not test the full battery record time without a 20 minute break to cool the glasses. So heat with the higher resolution seems to be a problem.

Some competitors make claims of higher resolution, longer battery life, and lighter weight, but there is no independent testing to verify these claims. I do question the validity of the competition claims.

Intermittent video recording can be a solution to the heat problem but my goal would be to record a performance for up to an hour with no interruptions. It may be possible with a tethered to power bank and 1080P30.

The Macy's store in the local mall had the Gen 1 glasses on display. I was really surprised how lightweight these were. They sounded okay, but any serious evaluation would need to wait until my ear unclogs. The controls were easy to figure out; the girl behind the counter was very familiar with their operation and gave clear instructions on how to operate the Ray Ban Meta Gen 1.

Off topic. I've used the now discontinued Microsoft HoloLens in a professional environment. It allowed engineers like me to interface with system scientists back at HQ while working on customer equipment in real time. We had the ability to pull up schematics, procedures and other technical documents. It worked pretty well for the most part. I suspect the Meta product is better though.

I wonder if it can cause eye damage, with trying to stare at something that is in your right eye only.
May be easier if you are right eye dominant. I am left eye dominant but in my demo I had no problem seeing the menu and text in the right lens. Some claim it is in the lower right lens but I saw the menu centered in the right lens looking straight ahead.

I will say the neural link wrist band will take some practice, not just learning the various moves but the wrist band is highly sensitive to position and how tight the band is. I would compare it to learning to play a string musical instrument like a violin. Takes practice. I had better luck with the touch pad on the right glasses arm. Giving verbal commands works the best and quickest to learn.

As my main interest in the Display will be framing my video shot, I was really liking the color display and it was sharp and made minor framing adjustments easy.

These glasses are not a mature product, but rather a beta release as not all features demonstrated are available and will require waiting for a software update.

Early adopter, beta tester mindset required!

The shills back then pushed the product and also disappeared when the company disappeared.
Got some updates on the Rokid KickStarter backing and product-
1. Rokid did release their iOS app for Apple iphone on Sept 23. I downloaded it and installed it and it appears to be bug free, however, I can't pair the glasses since I don't have any.
2. No new information on the video Image stabilization quality.
3. I learned that Rokid does have a final product selling in China as of June and began selling in Taiwan this month. Still plans to ship to the US in November. The KickStarter is for expansion of marketing manufacturing as the product is developed and selling. So that means there is no risk that the product will now be made.
4. Currently there is a debate on the cost to KS backers due to the uncertainty of the HTS classification ( US imposed tariffs). Rokid believes there will be no tariffs to the backers because the KS program has to do with an investment in the company and in return for the investment Rokid will "reward you with free glasses" based on the level of your investment. There is no word on whether this will pass the US tariff enforcement.
After October 10th the KS program ends and then you can purchase the glasses at $599 + Tariffs + local sales tax but for now free shipping. Their Kickstarter program is that if Rokid does not receive enough backers by Oct 10th the investors get their money back ( logistically, KickStarter does not charge your credit card) and then the only way to buy will be to order from China and pay the full cost. Depending on the every changing tariff %, the Rokid glasses could have a delivered cost of $1577 if the tariffs are imposed at the maximum.
5. As of 4 days ago Rokid surpassed it's funding goal by 15789%. So this means the ability to get a "free" pair of Rokid AI glasses reward for being a backer, will soon reach the maximum limit. But, I learned that Kickstarter instituted a new program to prevent backers from being scammed like I was years ago. If a company does not receive backing by the deadline, Kickstarter does not charge your CC, and you can cancel your reward at anytime prior to shipping. Based on this, I sprung for the no risk backing for $479. Fully refundable if they don't deliver in November.

Meanwhile I wait to receive the Rayban Display glasses from Sunglass Hut.

My Meta Rayban Display glasses came in yesterday and I had no problem setting them up as the onscreen step by step was easy to follow with instant onscreen feedback. Happy to report I got the wrist Neural link band properly fitted to my wrist now so it is working much better than it did during my demo last week. Still requires more of a learning curve for all the commands.

The video quality is very good but it only records for one minute clips, even though the menu settings has 3 minutes selected. Must be a bug in this first release. I recorded 15 one minute video clips and the battery dropped from 100% to 66%.

The transition sunglasses is fast and offers plenty of sunlight protection. With the wrist band on I can adjust the zoom while recording video by thumb and forefinger touching and then turn clockwise to zoom in or counter clockwise to go wide. Zoom on the iphone camera is better, however because iphone uses an optical zoom.

I really like the on screen display in color. It was easy to see after I cranked up the brightness for viewing in bright sunlight.

Good timing, then, to have iFixIt do a teardown video on the new Meta Ray-Ban Display. It has a good explanation on the technology that Meta used for image projection.

I saw that "ifixit" video and was fascinated by the technology, mainly because I see how good it is in actual use. Many who have no experience fear the single lens display is a problem but I discovered it is not at all. The floating 2D image and text in your view looking forward just is there and I do not need to strain or look to the side and it can be shut off with a simple command. The image and text just floats out in front of you like someone hung a TV screen in front of you.

Couple of negatives, or wish list items:
1. The record timer bug needs to be fixed. Currently, it stops all recordings at 1 minute. However the menu settings show it defaults to 3 minutes. I would like it to offer 10 minutes or even unlimited, stopped by battery charge level. Note that the Meta Ray Ban Gen 1 glasses had a way to record live unlimited but Meta disabled that in the Gen 2 and stated they plan to drop that feature in the Gen 1 with the next software update. :( Lots of owners are upset about that. I don't live stream but just want longer record time. In a test, yesterday, I did 15 one minute video clips back to back and the glasses did not over heat. The on board storage should be capable of much longer time at 3K video. I did send in a bug report to Meta, but got no response.
2. Hope the 3rd party accessories market will offer a charging cable like the ones made for the Gen 1 and 2 frames. Rokid has a much more elegant charging solution including magnetic battery swap on the back of the arm behind the ear. Rokid also offers 10 minute 4K video record time.
3. All these glasses need to offer a menu setting to shut off the LED flashing record light. It's annoying and creates rage in some people, probably people doing something that don't want to be caught doing. There are several 3rd party accessories and even a process to damage the LED. None of these procedures and accessories are perfect.

Don't you think this is just a legal cya feature so that people can't claim that they were being recorded without their knowledge or consent? I mean, if someone walked up to me wearing these big, stupid looking glasses with a flashing light, I would assume they are recording me.

Just curious, what can these glasses do for someone which can't be done better by some other device? I spent lot's of money and effort to get out of having to wear heavy, uncomfortable, sweaty glasses which needed constant cleaning. If I want to make videos, there are lot's of less cumbersome options out there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a gadget person. I'm not criticizing anyone for buying these and playing around with them. I just don't see the practical usefulness at this stage.

Everyone has their opinion about wearing glasses. I'm lucky as I only need to wear glasses for reading tiny print. But I do wear sunglasses and keep a pair of Rayban's in the car.

So you have a valid question as to what the camera in the glasses offer that your camera in your phone can't do?
1. The biggest benefit for me is "point of view" video recording. Working with both hands free while recording at what I am looking at.
2. When out as a tourist, I like to capture a walk about of the scenery. I used to have a small camera mounted on my hat, but camera glasses are much better and less silly looking.
3. The fear some people have of being recorded is actually rare. On YT those travel videos I enjoy watching have recorded some who complain and the reason is obvious because they are in the act of doing something illegal or caught cheating on their spouse. It's rather ignorant because it is rare these days to be in public place and not be recorded by security cameras whether private or by our government. A tourist recording his vacation scenery is not interested in people walking on by. However there are some who are seeking people doing stupid stuff for tiktok fame. Actually most of those tiktok stunts are staged.
4. Now for my personal objection to the flashing LED light- When I got my first pair of Rayban Meta glasses, on my first day using them at my granddaughter's Beach birthday party, twice a complete stranger came up to me while I was busy recording the kids playing a game. They interrupted me just to ask- Why is your sunglasses flashing that bright light? So much for capturing the moment of memory with the kids playing naturally.

Of course, my primary reason for having these glasses is the camera. But AI glasses go beyond just capturing memories on the fly much faster than getting out my iphone. I can just say "Take a photo" or "Record a video" and it does that immediately. Then I could also say "What am I looking at?" and it will identify what I'm looking at. Or see a sign in French, And I can say " Translate that please" Or look at a price in Chinese and say "How much is that in US dollars?" Adding AI to the camera is huge! It puts the camera on a whole different level of ability.

After spending a couple days with the Rayban Mega glasses, I bought a second pair and put custom Rx lenses in for reading at my workstation. Another cool feature, is at my computer someone posts a statement of "fact," I can ask for what the source of that is- and it will use AI search for a reference after speed reading the post and then tell me if it can find any reference on the internet for that comment. For example- Someone says 75% of all people approve of ... . AI would quickly find a reference or tell me it could find no such documentation. Pretty cool, right? Some AI enthusiasts believe people using these glasses will be able to appear like they have a 200 IQ. LOL!
