Yes.

Using the S-Video output (or composite), you'll get a SD (480i)
signal. I set the Voom Picture Format option to "Letterbox" so I get
the whole 16x9 picture with black bars on top and bottom when viewing
through TiVo. There is definitely quality degradation but it is
perfectly watchable. I wouldn't watch all my programming this way but
a show here and there isn't too bad.

Note. I actually haven't setup my lineup to Voom (I've got VoIP phone
and my TiVo can't dial in to get a new lineup since I changed from
DISH...got to take TiVo to a friend's to do this soon!) but I can
manually record just fine. I'm positive Voom's national lineup is
integrated with TiVo but I do not believe that it has the program
listings for local channels. You'd have to find a manual work around
for actually taping ABC.

I"ve been talking to www.169time.com about recording high def off OTA and they say you could do it using a LG LST-3410. I'm investigating that now.
I just can't miss my Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal! For VOOM recording, we have to use the S-VHS output to a S-VHS VCR and on the top of the line JVC deck that I have, it's almost DVD quality, better than SD OTA or cable which is about 330 lines.

The problem with Tivo and Voom is that Tivo won't control the STB to record
OTA's. YOU have to use the built in tuner which is analog. The alternative
is to manually tune the STB using a custom recording on the Tivo. It's
still better than VCR, but it was too much of a pain in the rear for me to
do manual recordings since it defeated the entire purpose of the Tivo's
season pass.

Is anyone out there using a standard (non directv type) tivo box to record
Voom? Does it record hd programming.. just in sd quality? ie if you tell it
to record LOST on ABC/Wed, can you watch it but the quality isn't there?

Am I making sense?

Robert.

Re: [VOOM] Re: Std Tivo box

I think that JVC is the technology leader in S-VHS. The were the co-developers of the VHS format and have the most models. In fact, in just the S-VHS format, they have 6 models.
But I would only consider the top two. They both have active video calibration.
I've had S-VHS VCRs since the early 90's, when they were $800. They are so much better and so much cheaper. We are now at the zenith of S-VCR technology. And I prefer it over hard disk recording.
I really believe the picture quality of JVC's top deck is almost DVD. I 've recorded DVD's on it and it's almost DVD quality (this takes special macrovision removing software - I did it just as a test - you are better off making a DVD copy of a DVD - I was just testing).
S-VHS has a max of 400 lines. Regular VHS has a max of 240 lines. Cable and SD OTA is about 330 lines. Which means that when you record on regular VHS, you reduce your resolution to 240 lines. YUK!!!
At least when I watch pre-recorded VHS movies, my Sony LCD HD TV does line-doubling for a better picture.
A couple of hints. Keep your old VCR for playing back old VHS tapes. While all S-VHS VCRs will play regular VHS, the playback quality is optimized for S-VHS, and not regular VHS. I always use different decks for VHS and S-VHS.
Don't buy special S-VHS tapes to record on. Regular VHS tapes are better now and on most S-VHS decks, especially the better ones, you won't see the difference. The only difference in the tape cassette is a small hole in the bottom of the S-VHS cassette. I buy my tapes at the 99 cent store and punch that hole in the bottom. The hole matches a pin switch in the S-VHS deck and tells it that you are using a S-VHS deck. Most decks have an switch that allows the use of regular tape but I punch anyway (requires a scratch awl to punch hole).
You can find JVC's seciond best deck - the HR-S5912U at Crutchfield for $179.99. JVC's top deck -the HR-S9911U for $359 at B&H Photo.
What do you get for the price diff? The top deck has digital processing. Time Based Correction with 4mb Frame memory, video calibration to match the tapes bias, and more.TBC removes the "jitter" for a smoother picture. What diff will you see? The top deck has no white noise from the tape visible and has a really smooth picture.
A few years ago, you would have paid $$$$$ for this available in only pro VCR's.
All other tape decks have white noise from tape, which is the same as tape hiss in a audio cassette player but this is visible noise.
Sop go for the Gold. It's cheap and the price will go up with inflation and the falling value of the dollar. This top deck is most likely still made in Japan, while 99% of the others are not.
