Recently returned DVR charged sales tax for shipping

I canceled Dish and had to return the DVR, they sent the box with label. I sent it back UPS. Now I get a bill for the return $15.00 and $0.90 sales tax. Is it legal to charge sales tax on return shipping? Bad enough I had to pay to return their equipment but sales tax or just another Dish scam?

Depends on the tax code for your area.

I didn't know that you could charge sales tax on non-goods. Maybe I could start charging tax on my services. :yikes

If you charge tax you are required to send that along to the taxing agency. You get no benefit from it at all...

They charge tax on monthly subscriptions so why not on shipping?

It depends on your states tax laws, they usually have an office in the state capital that you can contact. In our phone books blue pages are for Gov'i offics.

In Florida, we pay sales tax on services. But like someone else pointed out, the tax goes to the state.
