If the Washington logo was a potato and everyone wore spud caps and sang the potato fight song, this would not be an issue. :) I've been saying this for a decade.

There is a High School in my area who still has the Redskins as their name. Hurricane Redskins in Hurricane, WV.
I don't want it changed because then I would have to buy all new stuff.

My old high school, which doesn't exists anymore, was the Redskins. They vowed they would never change and didn't.

My HS team was The Saint Mary's Red Devils. People thought it was funny..

Always the possibility that Satan or some mebers of his army of darknes might complain. Other tha that they ae probably safe from controvers.

If the trend of lets not offend anyone continues,we may as well give the animal kingdom a voice too.I wonder what Dolphins,Ravens,Cardinals,Bears,Lions,Eagles, etc.would have to say? I think the Seahawks would be safe.;)

You use the term redskin to refer to an American Indian and think when you use it it's not a racial slur because you don't mean it? Really? Think back to the 1950s (or even present-day) "deep" south. They didn't mean anything by "Darkie" either.

I'm 41, I was in the Army for 20 years and have been all over the country in my lifetime. I've heard alot of racial, religious, ethnic and gay slurs in my lifetime(unfortunately, yes I've uttered them too in the past). I have never heard anyone ever refer to an American Indian as a "Redskin".

Oh wow 10 years from now I strike it rich!I'm going to start a new professional sports team. What shall I name the team?By then there will be a law that says you can't name it this and you can't name it that. It's beyond ridiculous now, imagine what it will be 10 years from now.The US of the offended, you won't even be able to fart without getting a ticket.

90% of native americans aren't offended by the team name Redskins. Please give it a rest.

Are there actually any native american groups actively currently protesting this, or is it primarily the politicians who have taken up the cause??

I don't know all the facts, just what I have read and heard, supposedly it's lobbyists that got the whole thing started.

I have never heard anyone ever refer to an American Indian as a "Redskin".
And I'd never heard of the term "spook" as being a derogatory term towards African Americans. That is until a decade ago when I learned it was! I made a holloween program named "Spooks can't be serious" where people in costumes told jokes to the camera. The only issue was, most of the people telling the jokes were African American! I changed the title to "Goblins" after I was informed by a coworker of the term.
Because you hadn't heard it, doesn't mean it isn't real.

Did you know that the term Jock was originally a slur against the Scots? Frankly, though. I don't give a s**t what people want to call me, as long as it isn't late for dinner.

I can't defend the Redskins name, because as pointed out, it really has no meaning than as a slur.
Personally I think Washington should just go back to their original name, the Braves. Then no logos or merchandise need be changed.

Funny thing, before Milwaukee moved down here and became the Atlanta Braves, we had the Atlanta Crackers. No one ever complained about the name, they were very popular. Ironically our negro league team was the Atlanta Black Crackers.
