Remove Malware/Spyware from a Mac

My wife's MAC Book Pro got infected with some malware. A pop-up constantly comes up in the right hand corner of her computer with advertizements. One of the ads wants us to install MacKeeper.

I am not familiar with Macs at all. How do I remove malware from it? Is there a free removal software I can download?

I installed AdMedic. That seemed to work.

It was very annoying. It constantly opened additional tabs and pages on her browser. It would change the homepage. It put up little pop ups on the bottom right corner.

My mom had problems getting malware on her mac, so I put Kaspersky antivirus on it and she has not gotten infected since.

Are they running as an Administrative user? Certain death on any platform that has Internet access. All my general purpose accounts (even mine) are unprivileged.
