why the dual broadcasts? why not just broadcast in hd, and allow the box to downgrade it?

am i missing something?

legacy hardware. I think they will eventually get there, but there are a lot of boxes still out there that would need updating.

so i take it the old hardware cant translate the signal.

ok

by the time its replaced, there will be something newer out there, never ending circle i guess

Yep.

Lots of old stuff that can't do 8PSK or MPEG-4 or any HD. Got to trade off costs of more bandwidth (satellites) with the cost of replacing millions of old boxes. At least, they are now retiring all the old non-8PSK boxes, so there is some progress.
