Not exactly sure I understand your question. Your TV has an aspect ratio that you can set. Some TV's allow you to adjust aspect for both SD & HD, others only let you adjust SD. Most TV's allow you to set the aspect for SD separate from the aspect for HD. So HD channels may show the bars, because they are set to 16 x9. SD channels are 4x3, but if you have the TV set to 16x9, you will get a stretched picture.

I was waiting for one of the moderators to answer, but they must be busy.

Pillar settings

DIRECT TV I found settings hdtv can not find Pillar settings it will not go to lt ?

I'm not sure what it is you're asking for but I think it depends on your TV set.

A lot of people prefer to turn the NATIVE ON and go with the Screen Format as ORIGINAL FORMAT. I would suggest you set your Bar Color as DARK GRAY if you have plasma set.

Don't forget to set your TV resolutions to what your set is capable of displaying. If using HDMI with the Native setting, you'll want to select 480p, 720p and higher if your set will work with those resolutions. What I like about the Native is that it doesn't do so much upscaling but lets my set do it so I get a better SD picture.

You can try the different settings for yourself to see what your preferences are. My TV set and DirecTv HD DVR are both set to 16*9 aspect.

As far as the pillars are concerned, there's still a lot of LETTER BOX events and I'd just get used to seeing them because the picture just doesn't look right stretched and it takes too long and too much effort to tinker with TV and STB settings trying to get rid of them.

I'd check out the A/V forums for optimum TV settings for your individual HDTV set too. But only change user adjustable settings on your TV if you want to try someone else's settings.

I hope that answers your questions. Good luck!

Is it greyed out or not an option?

I would suggest you set your TV set for 16:9 aspect ratio; some say the DirecTv should be set at 4:3 if TV has the wide aspect setting, I tried it just that way and it is OK, maybe better. If you want the letter box or pillars for SD channels only, you can set the TV set and STB for 4:3.

pilliar

Is it greyed out or not an option? I had it in my Direct tv could I have deleted pilliar option?

No; but you might try a restart on the DirecTv box.

BTW, I edited my previous entry; you might want to check that out also.

If the restart doesn't get it back, try unplugging the power from DirecTv box for 5 minutes.

pillars

I have thanks TV set for 16:9 aspect ratio; some say the DirecTv should be set at 4:3 if TV has the wide aspect setting, I tried it just that way and it is OK, maybe better. I want the pillars for SD channels only, you can set the TV set and STB for 4:3

If I understand you correctly, you want the pillars for SD channels.

If so, set both for 4:3. This may work for you without having to go through effort to recover button option. (Below).

If you still don't get the pillar option back after plugging it back in, you can try to force a software download by restarting and pressing 0,2,4,6,8 buttons at one second interval when first blue screen comes up. Warning: If you have CE software installed, the NR will replace it.

BTW, the Screen Format options in DirecTv STB HDTV are: Original Format, Pillar Box, Stretch & Crop.

I just noticed something that I'm sure it makes sense to some but when the DirecTv STB TV Ratio is set to 4:3, the above option available is LETTER BOX.

If DirecTv STB TV Ratio is set to 16:9, the above option available is PILLAR BOX.

If that's what you're seeing, that's normal. Try to set it accordingly. If that doesn't work, just try setting both TV and DirecTv STB to 4:3 with Original Format.

That may work; but if you need to change the pillar boxes to gray, the only way I could do that on my TV set was to set TV and DirecTv STB to 16:9. Gray is recommended for plasma sets to prevent premature burn-in of screen.

What is the make and model of your TV set?

How do you have it connected? HDMI or Component cable from DirecTv STB to TV?

pillar was taken off

I called Direct tv talk a man for an hour with h20 recv I have he thinks pillar was taken off

I'm not sure which aspect settings you decided on. Did you stay with the 16:9 for pillar box setting with bar color setting of gray or did you prefer both set for 4:3 to get the bars? This would make a difference if your TV is plasma.

As far as resolution is concerned, you should enable as many resolutions as possible if you have Native set ON. If you're using HDMI connector don't use 480i, it's not supported. If using the Component Cables, you'll want to select 480i for best SD resolution on non-HD channels. Try setting the others and see if your TV displays the picture, follow the confirmation messages on screen to see if your TV is capable of displaying that resolution as the boxes are selected.

If you're not sure about the directions above, just reply with your TV manufacturer and model and maybe someone can assist you. If would be helpful if you could also confirm what you're trying to setup as well. As best as I can tell, you're trying to get the SD picture in 4:3 format with the bars and best HD picture.

The settings are accessible through MENU/SYSTEM SETUP/HDTV and use GREEN BUTTON to tab between the sub-headers: VIDEO, TV RATIO (aspect), and TV Resolutions.
