With Sky Angel switching to Internet it looks like I may need to be switching in the not too distant future. My question is. Why shouldn't I just go to a FTA system instead of Glorystar? Aren't all the Glorystar stations available already on FTA? What are the advantages disadvantages.

I think the advantages to using GloryStar equipment is less setup (channels are automatically detected) and possible future epg.

The advantage to FTA equipment is the ability to get all FTA not only the Glorystar channels, but you do have to do more work to setup and keep maintained.

All Glorystar stations are FTA. The Glorystar system allows the reception of 101°W (AMC 4) and 97°W (Galaxy 25) satellites with a fixed dish and two LNB's. Because of the 4° spacing - there aren't many LNBs that are small enough to pickup two satellites that close to each other. Glorystar has some extra small LNBs and a special holder that makes it all work. It is a good way to receive the Christian broadcasts on those satellites with out needing a motor or a second dish.

FTA is really alot of work to get tuned in but it is really worth it!!!
There are other Christian channels available up there and there are great educational programming available, too. There are NO porno at all!
There is so much channels to choose! Check out TheList.
Sure, channels come and go but with the wonderful smartscanning features the FTA receivers have, it like going into a hardware store every week wondering what new tools are available!

depends on your needs...and your audience

. . . but which one would you give your grandmother?

If it's really for -you- and you don't mind the motor lag, and digging through the extra channels, then the FTA hardware is a good choice.
But if it's for your kids, anyone who likes to bitch a lot, or someone who lives at a different household, the lack of support you'd have to give to a GloryStar system might be the better choice.
Plus, the setup and forget of the fixed dish has got to be a plus.

For a lot of the enthusiastic readers of this forum, FTA is a hobby.
To many people who are just appliance operators, watching TV is a hobby, but the tuning of the TV is -not-.
Hunting down new channels would be a burden, -not- a plus.
So, consider your audience, and how much work you want to put into supporting them.
