Slow remote advise

Hi All,
This is my first post here. I have a VIP222K receiver and the #1 remote has very slow response. Pressing the System Wizard button used to fix it (I had to do it every other day) but now that does not work. I have to unplug the receiver to get it to speed up, this is a pain to do every couple of days. Dish claims it is interference with the plasma TV that is causing it. This problem started soon after we got the HD receiver in February and has steadily got worse.

Here is my question: If I get a Logitech remote will it still respond slowly? I have 4 remotes and want to consolidate and was wondering if the slow response will continue.

Thanks

Hello, Matt with DISH here. There very well may be interference from the TV that causes our remote to work slowly, or not at all. Have you ever tried using the front panel buttons of the receiver when the remote seems to be responding slowly? It could be the receiver is not processing the commands as fast as it should (so it could be the receiver needs to be replaced, not the remote). I know this doesn't answer the question about the logitech remote, I just thought that you should know there are other options (such as setting up TV1 for UHF if it's not already) to help with the interference part.

The speed was normal changing channels on the receiver, but it was a while ago when I tried it. The tech people at Dish me told that changing to a UHF remote would not help with a plasma TV. They suggested moving the receiver farther away from the TV, to be honest I think they are guessing.

In every case I've seen where there is interference, switching the remote from IR to UHF (or vice versa in certain cases) resolves the problem. At my home my TV was causing interference so my remote wouldn't work for about the first 20 minutes that it was turned on, changing it to UHF fixed the issue. What model remote are you using now (on the back of it at the top, will say something like 5.0 or 6.2 etc.)?

It is a 20.0 IR
I had the issue of the remote not working for about the first 20 or 30 minutes at my vacation house (which has a LCD TV) and switching to a UHF remote fixed that. I told this to the tech about this current problem but the tech said UHF is worse with plasma than IR.

This problem is a little different, it always works, just slowly. It is the slowest when pulling up the guide and trying to scroll through it. And after unplugging the receiver it will work correctly for a few days.

The brightness is at factory default and there is no "back lighting" if you are referring to lights behind the TV.

If it is interference from the TV, why does unplugging the receiver fix it for a few days?

I think it's a software bug. Both of my 722k's do this off-and-on and the latest software made it a lot less frequent but it still happens occasionally. I know for a fact that there is no interference on either of the two 722k's.

The receiver started responding slowly to remote commands again tonight. I tried changing channels directly on the receiver and it still moves slowly.

I pushed the reset button and it went back to normal.

Does this mean there is something wrong with the receiver? I don't see how this could be an interference issue.

No. I don't think there's anything wrong with your receiver. Both of my 722k's do this occasionally. It has been going on off-and-on since software L662 on the 722k. Not sure what software on 222k introduced this problem, but the 722 non-k has also been introduced to this issue by a software update. At any rate, as I said I'm pretty sure this is a software issue, and not a hardware issue. All I can say is do as I am doing and tolerate it until they eventually release new firmware that fixes the issue. Wish I could say more than that.

cyto, Have you tried switching remote to uhf? For what it's worth, I use uhf and on rare occasions the remote stops working completely, I grab my logitech and it works, also after doing so, the dish remote works once again. I have noticed that since the last firmware upgrade, my guide is a tad slow responding.

It is a software issue. L662 introduced the enhanced program guide to the 722k where you would see the ads in the bottom of the programming guide. Everytime you pull up guide or the new DVR main menu, there would be a lag from the receiver pulling up the VOD information for the ads. This was overcame by going into the enhanced guide option under Menu -> 6 -> 1 -> 6 and disabling in-guide enhancements. However, the latest update to the software has removed the ads but continues to have the lag. It seems like the engineer introduced a bug with the VOD ad system where the box looks through all the VOD information to find random programs and pull up the info/pic. It looks to be an issue that has moved to other receivers. CSC will acknowledge an issue but will not state anything about a fix.

The previous post is interesting about the last software update and supports my own experience, it isn't always the LCD interference. I have dealt with the LCD interference issue and solved it (RF for when the back-light is high, but only a problem for the first 6 minutes) and know that it does NOT affect sluggish response: The signal gets through or it does not, and when it gets through it is quick to respond. Remember the OP's problem is with the slowness in response NOT a signal not getting through as in not responding. This happens occasionally on my 722K and at my aunt's house with their 722K's--almost never with our 722's or with my aunt's old 722's. Often a reboot solves the problem. However, there were a few times it did NOT--NO the the HDTV settings were not changed and the HDTV had been on for quite a while. Eventually, this problem goes away the next day. I'm telling you, the sluggish response is a Dish box, especially the K's, problem, perhaps other processing going on and overburdening the chip-set since this is an intermittent problem, but it is the 722K.

I should add the my 722 in the very same room hooked up to the very same HDTV will respond quick and snappy with no delay while the 722K will have a "bad remote day," in IR or UHF and is sluggish in response. I hope the OP gets it square away.

Backlighting usually fixes it. If that doesn't work, I take a TV2 remote (21.0), flip the colored tab at the bottom of the remote to #1(green) and make sure it's addressed to the same tv1 address that is showing on the rcvr (menu 6-1-3). I've never had any further issues with the remote swap out. Only other issue I found was a customer that had the rcvr on the lower shelf near a floor air vent. When the cool air would go on, condensation would settle on the remote sensor on the front of the rcvr and the customer would have issues with the remote. When the air would go off and the condensation evaporated, the remote would work fine. Moving the rcvr to a higher shelf fixed her issues. It took several guys going to her house, several rcvrs, and several remotes later to figure that out. I don't know what your situation is, but it's something else to look at.

Hi all. Just joined when I saw this thread.

I to have a VIP222k receiver and am experiencing the slow remote response when brining up the guide and scrolling thought it. It works fine for a day or two then gets very slow in responding. I hold down the reset button and after reboot it's fine again for a day or two. I can tell you it's not due to plasma, LED, or LCD TV interference as I have a good old fashion CRT rear projetion TV. It sure looks like a firmware problem to me as things worked fine for the first two to three months when I first got the receiver and has been acting up for about the last month or two. I suppose it could be a receiver problem but I've seen
several other people experiencing this problem both on this forum site and others. That's why I think it's a firmware issue. Hopefully it will get fixed soon as it's very annoying to have to reset the receiver every day or two.

I have been ranting about this problem for months now. My 722k was so slow last night that I just had to reset the whole thing.
I was trying to scroll to the next day to see if I needed to record a show or not. It would have taken me forever as slow as it was trying to move.
Dish has got to FIX THIS PROBLEM SOON.

It is most certainly a software bug.
The UHF remote idea may have some validity to it, as my brother has had two UHF remotes from the first day of his install and has never seen this problem.
But me, with a UHF remote in the back room and an IR remote in the front, have the menu slow down problem all the time.
