Mine are in the upper 90's and I still get rain fade. ANYONE that says they never get it is either lying or lives in a desert.

Not saying I dont get rain fade. No one with sat can say that.
I will say that under conditions that the OP states, that is unreasonable, and not normal.
It takes a heck of a downpour for me to lose signal on my D* or E* setup. Generally these days, my E* goes out about one minute before my D* setup. Both only in HEAVY rain. Never during light or only couldy days.

I suppose we're lucky, we only got "rain" fade twice, once was when the snow was so wet and sticky that it built up a big wet layer on the dish that I had to constantly brush off.

The other was during a VERY severe thunderstorm 2 weeks ago, there was about 2" of hail in our yard after it passed. We lost signal for several minutes. Other than that, rock solid.

Dish placement also plays a factor. All of our major storms are driven by strong winds from the south-southwest. I always make sure my dish is placed where its got a chimney or part of the house blocking the wind from that direction.

That avoids wind hammering and wind driven rain.

I'm not lying and I don't live in the desert. If I've had two or three brief rain fades (5 minutes or less) in the last two years that's a lot for us. Same thing with my neighbors who also have DirecTV. Maybe, it's because our dishes are both on the side of the houses below the eves so they're better protected. Who knows?

I think some folks should think twice before they call people liers.

That is a big factor! Another is the size of the reflector while you will have "rain fade" it can be minimized alot by increasing the size of the reflector.Depending where you live and if the alignment is exact then the reflector size would need to be larger.;)

I never get it, unless you consider my area of SoCal, which receives about 20 inches of rain a year (ALL falling within a 4 month period) a desert.

BTW, have you ever been to the desert? Even though most deserts don't get much rain, they do get some pretty heavy rain when it does fall. Some of those summer monsoon storms can dump well over an inch an hour.

In heavy rain the other night , NE, lost the game for a while. If clouds caused fade I would never be able to watch tv.
So if I switched back to SD during the heavy rain, I would be able to get my signal back?

I've seen where while not raing at my home if there are large clouds dumping tons of rain near by that I've lost my signal. But to me that's nothing new. I've seen that for years here in Texas and up in the Chicago area.

While it is extremely rare, we do lose signal on occasion. But it takes a very heavy rain to do so. We have never lost signal on a cloudy day, in light rain or even in any snow storm. So I'd say we lose signal maybe 4-5 times per summer, and that is typically for only a few minutes since the extremely heavy downpours don't last that long.

How our frequencies compare to other areas, I can't say since I don't know how often other areas of the country get heavy downpours.

As others have already said, and unfortunately despite what customer service says, what you are experiencing is definitely not "normal".
On the coast here humidity is bad and its like it build up every day in the summer and pours in the evening for a short violent duration.

I did that the other night ....
Yes, to a certian degree, eventually if it rains bad enough, you'll lose SD as well, but yes, I went back to the SD the other night so I could finish watching my show and it worked fine.

Hey Goots...

Next time you want to do a long post, consider occasionally hitting the "return" key to start a new paragraph. A block of text jammed together like the start of this thread is just TOO hard to read.

stncold72 get lost , all equipment now is leased and not owned. DTV does not want canadians thanks you very much .

Now to the OP issue.

If your getting SFSS aka 771 and your were installed back in april this is what I would do.

Call directv
ask for Tech support
Tell them your getting 771 constantly and your still with in your 90 day installation warranty window and you want someone out here to fix the issue as it obvious bad dish pointing or the dish needs to be relocated.
You have 90 days from the date of instation so if you act now it can be fixed for free with out charging you a penny out of your pocket .... I also suggest the projection plan to project against service call fees after your 90 day install warranty is up.

Com' On Now Dodger :rolleyes::rolleyes: I've had Just about every D* satellite dish and E* satellite dish , They both get rain fade.
Do you Know what a Thunderstorm is? No one is going to flat out Tell me during a Thunderstorm your signal isn't interupted. Be Honest now.;)

When its out so long or so much that the reciever reboots thats really bad. I can't remember that happening twice maybe in the last 2 or 3 years.

I will say that during a thunderstorm I do not lose signal very often. Didn't ever know that lightning and thunder can knock out your signal. ;)

Now to be honest it takes a really hard rain to knock my signal out. When I had Dish it was far worse but I guess they may have fixed that with the 129 replacement.

It is a fact of being a satellite customer that you will lose signal a few times during the worst storms.

When I used to have the 1 lnb dish I got interruptions quite a bit. I can honestly say that since I have had HD I have never had an interruption. It could be that I wasn't watching TV at the time. We have had some strong thunderstorms and I did not lose a signal.

Here are some videos from my driveway and street during a storm that lasted over 48 hours. It rained this hard and harder at times for 2 straight days and I did not lose signal once.

i wont lose signal while it rains most of the time. i have a bigger chance of losing it when a storm is approaching with very heavy thick clouds from the west. even then it's just a few minutes. it's been raining like hell for over 4 hours now without a signal loss but i can't say it will never happen or has never happened since all sats are susceptible to rain fade.

directv rain fade problem

this has proven to be a big problem for directv,i know of a number of customers that have switched back to dish network because of directv rain fade issues.

I thought it would be clouds to the south of you that would cause problems? I know when I used to lose signal when I had SD only, I would lose it just prior to a heavy storm moving up form the south. I knew it would soon rain hard afterward.

Now I never lose signal, even in a hail storm.

I don't even lose it in Mammath when we have a few inches of snow on the dish and it is snowing heavy at the time.
