Sure hate to see this. I have an uncle going through the same thing right now. It can be a sad, hard thing to go through for everyone involved.

RIP Sparky. I have a lot of good memories from the '76 Reds, and a lot of bad memories from the '84 World Series when the Tigers beat my Padres. He was always a class act.

Captain Hook got the hook. Best manager in my lifetime for the Tigers. He was a real character. Met him once at a benefit, really nice guy.

I had the pleasure of caddying in 2 or 3 foursomes with Sparky from '78-'80 back in the Detroit area. I remember him being a very nice, personable, and funny man - a real class act. RIP.

I'm surprised that he lasted this long. He looked 80 when he was 40.

He was a riot as a color man on radio during the 1986 baseball playoffs. He liked to ridicule the Red Sox for being a team of Clydesdales.

Remember when he told the umpires that he had a film in the clubhouse, ready to go, showing that Luis Tiant had two different pickoff moves, and that one of them was a balk? He later admitted that he had no such film but he was sure they wouldn't agree to look at it.

As a Big Reds fan growing up and Tigers fan as well all my life, you've been a large part of my baseball experience.
