Standard or HD?

I've been out of FTA for several years.

Last time I was able to spend serious time in FTA was in 123 had all the active transponders with all the old TV shows.

I no longer have a motor but I do have a 31" dish and an SD receiver.

I would probably stick with 97 and not move from there for now.

Will I be able to use the SD receiver or is everything in HD now?

The SD receiver will work for most, but not all, channels on 97W Ku.

not much left on 123... KBS World from Korea is the only one your receiver would be able to get, but like Jim indicated, on 97W you would be able to get most channels, about 160 channels, mostly religious and a mix of mostly African/Eastern European/MiddleEastern/Asian channels. You would also be able to get the Chinese channels on 95W (in Chinese, English, French and Spanish).
If you have a clear view of the SouthEastern horizon you can try Hispasat at 30W, which has Cubavision with many movies in English. That would also probably work on your old receiver
