I have Fios hooked up to an HD Tivo and am using DTV less and less. I don't want to take the full leap of disconnecting service but would like suspend service for a while to see how my family adjusts to Fios by itself. But I have a lot of material stored on my 2 HR2x's and it would take quite some time to view all of it.

If I suspend my account will I lose the ability to view existing recordings? If so, is there a way to avoid that by disconnecting the box from the coax connected to the dish and also the phone and ethernet connections?

Nope, I am almost sure that the box needs the active DVR service to view the programs. You could also go with the family pkg with DVR service with the one box, but D* would want any other leased boxes back.
