Anyone who still does want to watch Bill Maher, or John Oliver for that matter...neither one's episodes are too terribly hard to find on YouTube over the following week or so. ;)

Where our wheels go
I was responding to the speculation that if Dish agreed to HBO's terms, then some of the cost would have to be included in the base package prices, as the $15 per month subscription fee for HBO would not be enough to cover the cost, and Dish cannot go above $15 as a line item due to that being the prevailing rate from the competition. Also, as has already been discussed at length, Dish would likely have to pay HBO for subscribers who do not actually exist, and that money would have to come from somewhere. The much larger than normal price increase (at least for the very cheapest package) would lead me to believe that Dish has already taken care of the necessary base package price increase for this purpose, and is banking that money in advance before HBO returns. Otherwise, I cannot think of anything that has been added to Welcome Pack that would justify that much of an increase. On the contrary, most of the new channels that get added to Welcome Pack tend to be the type of channel that pays Dish for carriage, which should help keep the price of that package down, by offsetting the annual increases for the channels we actually have to pay for. Since there are (presumably) so many fewer subscribers to Welcome Pack, a larger increase per subscriber may be necessary to reach Dish's goal of paying the additional cost for HBO, while a smaller increase per subscriber would suffice for more popular packages with lots of subscribers.

Possible I suppose, but unlikely in my opinion. I think it more likely the Welcome pack increases were just a two step process to bring the price in line with its costs and expected profit margin.

But HBO had the nifty monthly programming guide! LOL !!!

I loved the little square program guide -- I think it was just called "Premium" -- that came in with our cable bill every month. It had listings for Showtime and HBO, and later added Cinemax too. Back then, they all played mostly the same movies, with each having a few exclusives here and there. Seems like the back cover would preview the biggest movies coming the following month.

The guide I remember was mid to late 80's. One channel that played the same movie all day. $7.00 a month

Pacific Northwest, where it rains a lot...
The TV Guide mag that my parents bought at the store every week (for 15 cents!) had HBO listings in it...I think that was around 1964-65. Eventually it went up to 25 cents, then 50 cents, then a buck sometime in the late 70s, or was it a $1.25? I started using online listings in the early 2000s (around 2005ish) and have been using TitanTV now for about 7-8 years. I'd sub to TitanTV if they offered a yearly rate or a donation page (I block their ads with Adblocker because the page update takes a lot longer with all the ads and videos they stuff in it, not to mention the bandwidth the video ads eat up)...

He is a moron with no political balance. Just a Leftist biased position.
All politicians are due some satire. What I don't like about Maher is that if he doesn't like what a guest is saying he stops them, or worse puts them up to shame with the audience. Whenever he does that, I lose the all desire to watch him. I haven't tried watching in a long time.

I watch every week and I haven't seen him do that. I have seen him respond in a humorous and snarky manner, but that's just his brand of comedy.

Guys, political discussion is not allowed outside of the pit. Please do not continue with that part of the discussion in this thread.

I noticed no one seemed to have any issue with posts condemning Mahr for his politics such as "He is a moron with no political balance. Just a Leftist biased position." Only after my post does "No Political Posts" allowed get popular.
Makes me wonder why.
Just a point to ponder.

And that is why I mentioned that you weren't the only person involved. Staff is warning everyone, not just you.

I called no person out. It was a general warning and reminder that no politics outside the pit is a forum rule.

Now again, if any member wants to discuss politics on this site, Scott has a section just for that. This one is not it.

So please move on.

Believe me, if this site had a "Dislike" button available, I would have been using it for those posts. And I will leave it at that. :hiding :notrolls
