Well I did it, As of Febuary 10th, I will be a Blue Ridge Cable subscriber.

I will keep D* as well Untill March 15th with Just My HD DVR and the lowest pack aloud which I was told it was Still Family pack.

But I decided this morning after weeks of reveiws and the ease and low cost of upgrading the DVR storage of those Scientific Atlanta HD DVRs.

D* wants Hundreds of $$ to turn my 4 rooms system into all HD DVRs, or even MRV
Minimum $400 to be exact plus another 24 months of my life with an ever climbing price tag.
On top of that my DSL through Verizon thinks this year they are going to Charge me $39.99 for 3 Mbps internet service  Not Ever Going to happen!!

So I get a 1 Year Promo with HD DVR 4 rooms,Digital Premium ,5 Mbps Internet,Unlimited Phone, All free to install For $195 per month for 12 months and then it goes to $220 after with all my taxes and fee's includes.

I upgraded to 10 mbps Internet so my Price $200 for 12 month, and $225 per month after , 2 year price lock, with NO commitment.

I currently pay $242 per month for Phone Internet and D* service including taxes and fees.

But instead of 4 HD DVrs , I got HR23,H23,R15,R16. If I want another HD DVR and and H23 for a 4 room MRV.
That will cost me $400, so why would I do it?
That would make my Average monthly bill with D* over the course of 24 months $259, and I'll still have Slow DSL ,and really nothing to bragg about.

What has D* done lately is the Question that been on my mind since I signed back up again.

  • Apps , Don't care
  • NFL ST to expensive to make it a deciding factor for someone who likes their in market team.
  • Nascar Hot pass, Well Fox,TNT,ESPN,and ABC show the race in HD just fine.:up
  • MRV, well again existing customer without all the proper equipment rains on that parade really fast with upgrade costs
  • Cinemax, Enough Said.
  • Directv On Demand, While its a Leader in the Satellite world, with only 2 competitors, Its Slow and Weak in the Cable world.
  • Locals, well My DMA has about 10 missing in D* line up.
  • Protection plan, Really on crap I don't own, nor will ever own.
  • HD PQ, well not worth $50 a month more.
I'm open for thoughts and suggestions. :popcorn

I hope you have a large box of kleenex so after your change is over and you start crying big time for makimg the change you will be ready.

Good luck!
If it is the Scientific Atlantic boxes that I have used.....well...lol

Seriously, hope you enjoy your new provider.

A few months back I went out of contract & thought about killing Directv till they turned my HD Distants back on... I should have an HR24 coming in today so I will renew my vows for another couple years... I still watch Dish more, but I love the timeshifting with the distants... (couldn't stand to watch the SD versions when they were the only option)

Good luck to you Hemi...Hope it works out, I know it is frustrating for some with the lack of national HD that Direct is not getting, our cable option is comcast and for now its no thanks for me. May I ask though what is you updated Direct bill looking like scaled down and I am guessing you are keeping untill march 15th to avoid EFT, you never know maybe Direct will discuss ways to keep you as a customer...But anyways let us know how your experience as been with cable

I am such an HD snob I can't justify the local cable co because of quality. I see the Comcast HD feed weekly and it is crappier than Directv. Directv's is not perfect but noticably better than Comcast plus I have 4 HD-DVRs and with the HD-DVRs fees under Comcast plus the programming I would pay $50 more a month under Comcast which is 8 months to break even when I keep Directv if I wanted certain upgrades. I know Directv is not perfect and I believe Directv should have a program to allows customers loyalty upgrades every 12-24 months without having to fight to get an upgrade out of a CSR. Just my two cents.

Well I'm not sure what the HR's do that the Scientific Atlantic don't do?

They are 2 tuner, they have PIP, Caller ID,
They have multiple recording settings, Can I remote DVR? , I doubt it, But honestly, I've only ever used this once.

Hard drive space is weak at best with 20 HD hours and 90 SD, But for the cost of 1 one D* HR 24 I can upgrade 2 of the SA boxes to 750 GB of recording.

Since the Install cost me nothing,( Except my first bill is for 2 months of service, that arrives 25 days after my install)
I can afford to drop $200 for a couple Esata drives.

March 15th is when my last ST payment is due from 2010 season and I'm out of a Commitment with Verizon .
I don't want to cancel D* untill I'm paid up from all my seasonal packs.

I agree, I like my HD PQ, I'm sure many cable companys are weak , But Blue Ridge isn't any worse then Dish.

Good luck Hemi!

Sometimes its better to look at all options available and take off the blinders. Like I mentioned recently my neighbor switched from D* to cable. They liked D* but wanted to upgrade a receiver to DVR and would have been charged 200 bucks. I guess they went with a bundle through cable and saved a bunch of money.

I looked at Comcast but the DVR they use is very buggy and very cumbersome. The HD channels are all scattered across various numbers and if you change the channel to a SD only channel you'd have to stretch it to show on TV. It doesnt have a 4x3 override. My Grandma has it so I've seen the good and bad.

good luck ,i have no choice but satellite tv.i do have dsl for internet.i was with dish for 9 years but the mlb is the reason i change ouer to direc and also espnu in hd my my locals in hd.dish has more movies channel in hd.i am disappointment in d cause they not adding any hd channels.i hope true be add for the march madness, lmn,.

I have to look at it as a whole,
You need Internet if you want Directv , Bottom Line.

I'm Pissed at 1 of 2 only providers in my area.
Verizon Sucks, OK Fios isn't an option, and my Verizon and their 3 claimed Mbps that used to be 2.86 is now 2.35 mbps is sad.
And $34.95 per month if I sign with a bundle from them for $70 on unlimited Phone .
NO Thanks
So they want to charge me $39.99, No way!
G10 service with Blue Ridge $42.99. Yea , A no brainer.

Home phone, Well Yea we need it, I run a Business.

Im not sure of the capabilities of the boxes compared to the HR, but the ones I have used have been clumsy and cumbersome to operate.
Hopefully you will have a better experience with them than mine.

Are you getting high speed internet with your cable company as well? If so, instead of paying for phone service, get an inexpensive VoIP service such as Ooma.
