Hello,

I am trying to convince my wife to get DirecTV, we currently have Time Warner Cable but personally I hate it. The signal quality is not great, and I don't like needing a digital box in every room we want to get premium channels for. She loves our TiVo series 1 box, and the thought of getting another TiVo with the DirecTV might be enough to sway her. But there are stil two issues:

Can I use my TiVo series 1 to control the satellite tuner in the room that won't be getting the DirectTiVo receiver? I have lifetime service attached to it and have upgraded the hard drives and don't want to lose that investement. Also, I have no land line phone and the DirecTV site makes you check the "I really do have a land line phone, I swear!" box before you can proceed with your order. My current TiVo uses a 3rd party ethernet card to get updates, and I know Series 2 units can use USB ethernet, so is a land line really required? Any help would be appreciated.

Your Series 1 is compatible with satellite if I am not mistaken ... like the Series 2 just takes what it gets for signals. Setup options for guide data are up to you.

You do not need a land line. There is a hack called fixsub that fakes this process and it is not illegal. If you want USB you can have it. Providing you are comfortable running more hacks on your DirecTiVo unit. Goggle "Sleeper" and see this thread.
