TIVO SR2 problems

The other day the tivo decided to reboot its self and now it stuck at the ( welcome Powering up screen) and will go no futher I have unpluged it and let it set all night , nothing. Here is what I did today, I took the tivo top off and unplugged the unit and HD cable and then plug the power cord back in and I still get the powering upscreen without the HD plug in ( how is that posssible ?) Is the HD gone and theres no hope?

The software is not stored on the Hard Drive. That is why you still get that screen.

so can I stick the HD in another working Tivo and get it to work?
