Since I switched to the Hopper 3 all my TVs that have signal from a RF modulator have the black bar at the top and bottom. In the past when I had HWSs and 722Ks the TVs that were getting signal from my RF modulator did not have the black bars, they all had full screen. Is there a setting someplace in the Hopper 3 causing the black bars at all my other TVs?

There is no setting that will change the format. Since the CUI came out all the composite video is like you described. I bought a component to composite converter to feed the modulator. It gives me full screen that way on channel 14 on all the misc TV's.

So how does the modulator feed the misc TVs? Can you send a link to the component to composite converter when you have a chance?

I bought it so long ago I have no link. Just Google it. I think it came from Amazon.

I have component from the Hoppers going to a switch which feeds a component amp with 4 outputs. 1 of those component outputs goes to the component to composite converter and then to a modulator which outputs channel 14. That is then mixed on a coax with the other channels modulated from big dishes, FTA, DirecTV, surveillance, etc and a few OTA channels and sent to more than a dozen TV's all around the house, offices and shop.

OK, thanks. Looks like that is what I need. I hate the format black bars.

Most TVs have manual scan settings to fill the screen to your preference.

In my particular case the coax feeds over a dozen TV's from a 13in Sharp tube TV with a manual channel changer on the front that goes click, click, click to a new 24in LG and everything in between. (The big TV's are fed with component and /or HDMI)

To change the picture size or scan settings for one particular channel and then change it back for all the other channels would not be practical and for most of these TV's it wouldn't be possible either. :)

So, even the format button on the Dish remote won't fix the OP's problem? Jeez, that bad. I used to run from analog RF output for some time, even into my TiVo's for ocassional recording from non-dvr Dish STB's but not in years and certainly not with the H3.

Yeah, every company is "dumping" true compatability for legacy formats such as analog output in legacy formats, mostly because of the cost. I am still lamenting the removal of S-VHS outputs because they have easily superior PQ when connected to a S-VHS input and look great on S-VHS VCR's I still have and use on ocassion. It makes all the differnce in the world. I have a number of apps that no longer run on my Jellybean and KitKat tablets that, otherwise, still work very well as tablets, but each app seems to die one by one with messges stating that the OS is too old to run latest version of app and, even worse, the old App is no longer supported by developer and has been killed and only the latest version functions. Yeah, I have later OS tablets, even a 7.0 Nouget, but it still hurts when an old, but perfectly good tablet won't be supported. Yes, I've researched "how to use your old tablet for all sorts of thngs other then a tablet," but It's as if we are all supposed to spend all that money again to update all our hardware. I feel your pain, OP. I hope you get things to work as you want them to.

I think I would wean myself off of RF modulators if the Hoppers had sync capability for recordings to other TVs. Most of the misc TVs in my home have Joeys now. If my two Hopper 3s could sync recordings to the Joeys I would be a happy camper. It would be a nice feature to add to the Hopper system. It is nice to be able to enjoy a recording together with someone else in two different locations. Also, for myself, I use a wireless headset. I can watch a recording from several TVs in my home as I roam around performing house duties.

No more top and bottom black bars. Installed a component splitter cable and a component to composite RCA converter. All TVs fed from my RF modulator now have full screen without having to format the TVs. So far everything is working great. If I start to get any TV quality issues I will install a component distribution amp splitter Thanks JSheridan for your suggestions.

Perhaps they could start with the Hopper Duo. That should be relatively easy to test with only one Joey. Then, if it works well, they can work on rolling out this functionality to the other Hoppers.

And you'd think with 16 tuners and only 8 clients at most, they could use other tuners to do that. I mean there are always extra tuners. I'd be hard pressed to see a 6 room system use more than 10 at a time and that, almost never
