Twelve volts battery to power microHD and portable twelve volts Tv?

Any idea as to where to buy a tweve volts battery small and powerful enough to power the microHD and a twelve volts Tv when working outdoors while testing, and setting up a new FTA system.

A nice little lawn tractor battery works and is inexpensive. Try Walmart.

Smaller ideas would be a couple sealed cell 12V batteries for emergency lights (batteries plus) or even a small motorcycle battery.
 
A pair of 6 volt lantern batteries wired in series would run the Micro and a 12 volt small flat screen TV. They are usually available cheap at a $ General store.
 
I got one of those Eviant T7's at Sears a couple of years ago. Like it a lot. Has it's own internal battery good good for a few hours. Used for sat dish alignment, in vehicle(s), and the bathroom. (Nothing like the morning news while doing the duty)
I'd go with the gel cell or lantern batteries as there's no fear of spillage(acid).

I actually have a 120 volt GFCI outlet at the base of my dishes. I have a small card table, pansat 9200 and 15" LCD tv stored in a building 10' feet away. The tool pouch has all the tool sizes that fit the dish. Pretty quick setup.

I have a spare DeWalt cordless drill 12v battery I was going to experiment with. I think the MicroHD power supply is rated at 12v - 1.5A and the cordless drill battery is probably around 2.5A so I am a little apprehensive to try this.
 
Current isn't like voltage. A 2.5 amp battery doesn't force that much current into a device, the STB only draws what it needs from the available current.

This battery will be fine!

Thanks for all the answers. I just came across a 12 volts Sealed Rechargeable battery, rated at 6.5 amps.hr, which it is being charged at the moment, this battery is very, very OLD. I hope that it takes a charge.

Brian, you mentioned that the 2.5 amp battery is fine for the microHD. If this 12Volts 6.5amps battery takes a charge, will it be OK to use it with the microHD and a 7" 12Volts Haier portable Tv together with out any harm to either one.

The Amp or Current rating of your battery is the amount available to be drawn from. You are not going to damage any equipment by having too much amperage available.

Think of a battery as a large water tank. The hose connected at the bottom of the tank is like the voltage. Like voltage, the size of the hose allows only so much water to flow through the hose at one time. Think of the amount of water the tank can hold as the amperage. The water will flow at the same rate but more water in the tank will supply water through the hose for a much longer time.

Just make sure that the devices that are drawing from the battery do not total to an amount of current that is greater than the battery output current.

If the battery is rated at 6.5 amps and the equipment is drawing a total of 2 amps, the battery should last about 3 hours. If the battery is rated 2 amps and the equipment is drawing 2 amps, the battery life will be about 1 hour. A car battery might be rated 500 amps and power the same 2 amp draw equipment for 250 hours.

Car Battery Capacities

Car batteries are rated CCR. Cold Cranking Amps. What a fully charged battery can deliver at 0° Farenheit for 30 seconds while maintaining a voltage of at least 7.2 volts. Reserve Capacity is in AmpHours. (actually minutes @ a 25 amp draw) But working the math backwards to derive the A/H rating comes pretty close in my experience. 20 minute RC = 20 min @ 25 amps = @1 amp draw = 7.5hrs - 7.5AH
So don't buy a 1000 amp car battery thinking you'll get 1000AH. Might only be 60 minute Reserve Capacity. Or around 22.5AH.
I've had to limp home/repairshop on Reserve Capacity a couple of times. :eek:
Want big AH? Get a marine trolling battery. (Deep Cycle)
 
Thanks Brian and Fat Air, that is the simples and straight forward explanation that I have ever heard...Unfortunately my 12V battery did not take a charge for it was too old and dead... Trying another rechargeable battery at the moment. I am looking into Fat Air's idea of the trolling battery, LOL!

Even small 12 V battery can do the job for 1/2 to 1 hour, as the micro HD needs less than 0.7 Amp to work. A few pictures follow.

I love deep cycle marine batteries. Very heavy though for this application. I use them with a trickle charger as backup power for the ham station.

Just to show a ridiculous "ditto" to the ampere hour rating --- my HD, 12 VDC TV and Computer speakers that make up my home system (as well as my HAM station and most everything else) are riding on 450 AH deep cycle battery banks. The rating, is as was pointed out, is the size of the water tank. If the dog drinks out of my coffee cup - neither one of us gets enough. But if she drinks out of the 45 gallon stock tank and leaves my cup to me - we both get our thirst quenched. ( yeah, and the coffee gets cold!)

(For my money - from now on, the Trojans can stay in the store - Walmart or BiMart Deep Cycles charge better and hold the charge better, with wild temperature swings (and rough rides) - at less than 1/2 the cost.) Your mileage may vary.

True, receiver, being not-linear device, has the ability to "take" what it really needs.
The micro HD is wonderfully tolerant to voltages much smaller than nominal.

Nice test! At least you really have to draw down the battery before the uHD kicks off. Just out of curiosity did you try the same test on the TV too?
