Upgrade to HD DVR, phone line question?

I have a friend who is about to upgrade both recievers to HD DVR after eight years of continuous service and wanted to know if the phone line is required for DVR service?

No, only for ordering PPV thru the remote, or signing into game lounge. But if he networks the HD/DVR to a home network with net access, that would not be an issue either.
