It appears the owner of Viewtech, the company that imports FTA receivers and sells them under the Viewsat brand has been indicted for "conspiracy to violate the Digital Millenium Copyright Act." He allegedly hired a couple guys to hack the new Dish Network encryption codes for Nagra 3.
Federal investigators said "But the fact is that a majority of the over 200 free satellite signals that are freely available are religious and ethnic programs in languages other than English.
"The market for such programming is relatively small and doesn't support the millions of FTA boxes sold in the U.S. and Canada."
Echostar has previously sued Viewtech "for allegedly illegally bringing Dish programming to about two million homes in the U.S."
If convicted they face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. I don't think that is worth trying to beat subscription fees.
I don't think I'd plan on looking for any new Viewsat receivers any time soon.
Did any of you realize that you are a relatively small market?
Greed, nothing but selfish, arrogant greed. It is a sad commentary on what this great nation has become.
