I have a VIP 211 box with component video out which I run directly to the TV, and RCA video+audio which runs thru a VCR to the TV. I get the HD picture on the TV, but no sound. How does sound get transmitted using component video?

you need to use the RCA cables from the 211 to the TV (red/white). Using component cables you need 5 wires (red/blue/green for video, red & white for audio) to get video & audio

Exactly

The component cables (red/blue/green) only provide video, you will also need the red and white RCA cables for sound

If your TV has HDMI you need to use that. It will carry your audio.. Other than that you are going to have to split the audio(Red/White) to go to both the TV and the VCR.
