VIP 622 sunset

My 622 works fine both hdmi and component.I know the first ones had hdmi issues but this is a refurb. It may not even be the first replacement.
We sort of have a unique situation which keeps me from upgrading. The tv1 output goes to avr/tv in the living room like most people. The tv2 output goes to a wireless transmitter so we can watch the 11pm local news etc when we go to bed.Yes it's in sd but do we care? No.
Also like paying only 7 bucks for dvr service.Like not paying for 2nd receiver.Like not paying for OTA adaptor.
Having only 2 tuners has rarely been an issue. Can usually find a repeat at 3am.Hard drive size not an issue especially now that much of the same programming is on our Roku.

Well, if Dish is planning to end 622 funtionality, then Dish will replace those units for subscribers who have them active on their account. I would not worry about it because IF the 622 is set for a sunset, the process in the past has been this:

US Mail is their FIRST method of contact to have your DVR exchanged free of charge. If you do not respond to the US Mail, then they will attempt to call you by telephone to arrange an exchange. If you do not respond to either of the above, then your 622 will become a doorstop, and then you call to complain, and then they set-up an exchange for a working DVR of equal or greater functionality.

It is true that the 622 and select older pre-Hopper DVR's are considered legacy equipment and Dish is attempting to retire them, but that will take time.

Can anyone confirm the 622 is set to be shut down by a soft date? I hadn't heard that either.

Have a VIP622 that is fine so far as well.

There was a software update sometime in late Summer or Fall (2020) that those of us with older receivers may not have even noticed at all. I only became aware of it when I was trying to change the channel when both tuners were recording something. I had forgotten it was still recording and just hit the recall channel button automatically when the TV came on. I got a very different pop up menu with options I had never seen before as to how to proceed vs the standard one that had always come up for forever.

Out of curiosity I brought up the system info screen and saw that the screen had changed at the bottom and the identifier now said copyright 2020 Echostar Technologies where for the last year or so prior it had read 2019. I have no clue what the software version was before this to know if it truly was an actual full out software change, just speculation based on the date and the noticed popup.

However, it makes me feel like if they put in that effort to make subtle changes like that, and presumably others that weren't as noticeable, it was done to make for smoother operation either on Dish's end or the consumer's. And that makes you think they don't intend to junk it so long as people are still willing to pay them for service on it, I may be wrong but the way I understand it they earn more money per month off of multiple dual receivers than a single home Hopper.

No such software update for my ViP211k. It still says Copyright 2019 on the System Info One screen. The previous software version would be listed under:
Menu > System Setup > Diagnostics > Counters
Then, under Common Counters, scroll down to number 12) Previous Software
(At least, that is where it is on my ViP211k. The numbering may or may not be different on other ViP models.)

Here is the list of the latest software versions for ViP receivers, posted by HipKat in another thread last month:

Thanks for that crodrules, always like learning those menu tricks, I've only had the 622 for a year or so. It's a shame they didn't put an update through on all of the non Hopper boxes.
