Sorry to post a new thread on this, but the old thread doesn't seem to be getting any views.

The drive in my 722 is going south. (personally-owned unit, not Dish-owned).

Is this still the current compatible list for 500GB replacements?

Hitachi HCS725050VLA380
ST3500830SCE
WDC WD5000AAJS-57

They all seem to be as scarce as hens teeth.

Anyone found any newer drives that work?

Thanks!

Might be cheaper to add DHA, replace the unit, then drop DHA ($6/month pro-rated daily + $25 cancellation fee).

Go to Dish mod @ the yahoo groups site. They have listings of compatible HDD's.

And that list hasn't been updated in years.
OK, I went to look it up. The last list for the 622/722, courtesy of "vip622" on the Yahoo Dishmod interest group last January, is this:

nice post.....wonder if the 1tb drive gets full capacity or limited too 500 gb.
just ordered a Hitachi HCS725050VLA380 just in case or my 722k but that 1 tb drive would be real nice....

Thanks a million guys!!!

Quick question: seems that heat is a big issue for these units, and even though this particular 722 in my home office is sitting in the open with a little 22" LCD on top, it seems to get hot.

I had read a post in the past about someone using a drive cooler/fan, not sure how much room there is since I haven't cracked the unit open yet.

Any thoughts on that?

Thanks Tony. Are you just powering it off the Vip722's USB port?

Ordering one up right now.

WT

A lot of us are using this fan:

Newegg.com - Thermaltake Mobile Fan 12 AF0007 Case Fan. USB Powered, 12CM Adjustable Speed Fan With Retractable USB Cable

Install it externally, at the left rear of the receiver (as viewed from the front) sucking the air out...Made a big difference for me!

Edit: You can use the fan speed control to adjust the fan for the minimum amount of noise.

Yes, you can power it from the receivers usb port. I did it that way for the 1st couple of weeks. Then I realized that I had extra ac powered usb chargers that I use for my mp3 players. Now I use one of those. The receivers temperature dropped a couple of degrees more by using the external power supply.

Where did you order it from?

Code:
https://www.howardcomputers.com/search/selection.cfm?srchKey=HCS725050VLA380&x=8&y=31&PageName=%2Faccessories%2FSelection.cfm&Cataloger_CatID=0401&ProdID=&sid=&pmnuid=

I have not received it yet, it is supposed to ship in a day or 2, not sure about there stock.

You have to be careful with the laptop coolers. Some laptop coolers suck air in from the top and blow it out the bottom, while others suck air in from the bottom and blow it out the top. The normal airflow for a 722 is for air to go in the bottom and right side, and to come out on the left rear of the receiver. The laptop coolers that suck air in from the top are exactly opposite to what the normal airflow should be.

Initially I tried a laptop cooler. It was one of the ones that blew the air the wrong way. It did not work very well at all for me. I tried turning the laptop cooler upside down so that the air would flow in the right direction, but it only improved the cooling a little bit. I ended up returning the laptop cooler and replacing it with the Thermaltake that I mentioned in my previous post. The Thermaltake fan, installed at the left rear of the receiver sucking air out, performed much much better than the laptop cooler. My 722 ran much cooler with the Thermaltake as compared to the laptop cooler that I tried.

Edit: Please, I am not trying to start a flame war about which is the best cooler. I am merely reporting my own personal experience with this issue. :)

I modded mine by removing fan connector from board slip in two short 18ga. wires in fan connector and the other ends into the hdd power socket on the mother board , just jamming them inside the drives power connector. no one will know if you change it back and have have to send in for some reason.

the fans runs all the time at a low to medium speed, and my receiver is about 5 feet from me and it does not bother me at all. my hdd temps are about 12 degrees cooler.

I ordered the Thermaltake USB . Seems like the best approach.

Also ordered a 1TB drive, we'll see how it goes.

Got my Thermaltake fan, quick question: When you said you mounted it at the left rear of the receiver, I'm assuming you mean on the left side of the receiver towards the rear (since the left side of the receiver has the ventilation panels), and not the actual rear (backside) of the unit?

Yes, that is what I meant.
