[VOOM] Directv to expand HD offering

NEW YORK (Reuters) - No. 1 U.S. satellite television provider DirecTV
Inc. on Wednesday said it would launch four new satellites to expand
programing capacity, particularly for high-definition channels and
interactive services.

"Only DirecTV, not cable or other competitors, will have the capability
to bring hundreds of high-definition channels and other enhancements to
consumers across the entire country," said Chase Carey, chief executive
of the DirecTV Group Inc. .

El Segundo, California-based DirecTV said the new satellites will help
the company keep a hold on strong subscriber growth in local channel
markets.

DirecTV will launch the first two new satellites in 2005, with
programing available to consumers in the middle of the year, adding
capacity for more than 500 local high-definition channels.

The remaining two satellites will launch in early 2007, with capacity
for 1,000 additional local high-definition channels and 150 national
high-definition channels.

All four satellites will be built by Boeing, with the first two capable
of offering both video and broadband Internet service, the company said.

DirecTV Group is controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. through the
Fox Entertainment Group.

Hey all,

I have a Mitsi 65" RPTV that has many varied inputs, among them both DVI and component. I've seen in this forum in the past that most seem to prefer the PQ over the DVI input than the component. I checked how I was viewing from the STB, and I was watching thru the TV's comp input. I check the STB and the TV's inputs, and noticed that the installer had hooked up both types. I then selected the DVI input from the TV but there was no signal, just a black screen.

Does anyone know why this would be? Can only one set of inputs be used at a time? If I unhook the component setup, might the DVI one then work? Do I need to somehow tell the STB to use one over the other??? Any ideas/answers out there???

TIA.

[VOOM] Re: DVI vs Component

On my TV I have the DVI hooked up. I have to use the remote from my
TV (not zoom) remote to get to DVI mode. The component cables (3
cables) are hooked up but only 2 are hooked up. They are the audio
left and right. I can use the Zoom remote to get back to my cable but
I have to use the TV remote to get back to DVI.

[VOOM] Re: DVI vs Component

The STB will output both DVI and component simultaneously. Use your
TV RCU to control the input to the monitor. If the DVI is
blackscreen it is probably either a TV input issue, or an HDCP (copy
protection) issue- your monitor may not be HDCP compliant. Try
setting the TV to DVI, and connect/disconnect the DVI cables. See if
a DVI error message comes up (to check the compatibility).

[VOOM] Re: Directv to expand HD offering

To this news, I say "so what". D* satts don't usually launch on schedule. If I recall correctly
7s was about 2-3 months later than target launch date. So "april" becomes June or July if
they follow historical norms. Then, there is all this set up, testing, and moving existing
channels around which adds 2-3+ months before there are channels to actually see.
That's Sept-Oct. So, if this all pans out, D* may add a lot of bandwith (that might get
allocated to HD) a little more than 1 year from today. In the meantime, I'm watching lots
and lots of HD on Voom now and until then.

D* loyalists (I used to be one of them) waited more than a year to get CBS-HD E & W, Bravo
HD (and they will probably see FOX HD soon). Big deal. Now they'll wait and wait and wait
some more.

Relative to Voom, the best thing about this news is that it will push Voom to be even more
aggressive with HD channel additions, and the new hardware. Voom needs to keep
pushing the (HD) envelope to make it harder and harder for D* to "catch up".

Lastly, D* seems to have a big focus on repeating their "locals" (channel) strategy, so a lot
of this HD bandwith is going to go toward serving local channels to individual cities. For
those that can't get over the air signals, this is a great thing. But for many who can, who
really cares (compressed locals or less compressed over the air locals?).

D* needs to deliver in a big way. And Voom needs to make it hard for D* to negate its lead
in HD offerings. Either way, the winners of the race will probably be the viewers.
