If it has failed, removing it and mounting it under Linux will do no good. But there are data recovery companies that can do this, at a price, but may yield a still unusable device.

With data recovery you get back a drive or DVDs that have all your files on it, but then you must somehow copy it to the drive on the DVR.
If you knew how to put them back on in a readable fashion, you would not need the data recovery folks in the first place.
