Hi,

I feel like I'm coming over to the dark side after having had Dish for 10 years. Anyway a couple of questions, does DirecTV still require a SSN to get service or do they now offer a pay as you go service wherein you buy everything yourself? Furthermore I'm right on the northern Maine/Canadian border, is there a specific type of dish I need their my receiver (I'd like a 4K option).

Thanks,

J

They still need your SSN. You can buy equipment from Solid Signal, but it will still be leased, if you ever cancel your service, you can’t keep it. For 4K service, you’ll need a HR54 or HS17. The HR54 is a traditional set top box DVR, whereas the HS17 is a server that doesn't connect to a television, and only powers clients. What one you go for (assuming you do Solid Signal) is a matter of choice. You’ll also need a Reverse Band dish and a 4K Genie Mini client. 4K even then is only limited to a few speciality channels. Hope this helps.

The HS17 also has 7 tuners compared to the HR54’s five. You don’t need a special dish for the area you’re in, just the Reserve Band dish for 4K. If you use the Hopper 3, the Genie might feel like a downgrade.
