I've said for years , the way the Canadian satellite companies have mini bundles that you can add or subtract to save money. One for sports, news, women's interest, children's,movies, general variety , etc. IF the U. S. would allow this a consumer could save money ,but they won't because it would mean an end to subsidizing the sports channels like ESPN. The only way this will ever change is through a change in the laws in the congress and I don't see that happening ,especially after the recent change in the senate too. The consumer has a choice to bend over and take it or cut the cord . Sound like true freedom of choice, doesn't it?

In Canada, the US broadcast networks blackout certain American programs that Canadian networks broadcast. Like sports for example.
I've heard of CanCon (Canadian Content law).

I'm glad that I got a Slingbox for Christmas so I might set up my M1 at a mutual friend's house in Charleston, SC so I could watch their local news (in real time w/ commercials, not the TV stations websites where it's black screen during breaks). Localism is important in the state. Yes, I've seen some NYC and Los Angeles feeds on a website which will remain nameless. IMHO, The National Association of Broadcasters ( or the NAB) killed FREEDOM OF CHOICE.

I could use my 25' telescopic antenna mast with 5' mast on the rotor, and I could get three adjacent markets from Augusta, Charlotte, and Columbia OTA since I'm in Greenville, SC DMA.

Dish understands and is in the process, read carefully below what Ergen has to say.Note the varied "GROUPS" of channels comment.

In part to offset recent subscriber losses, Dish is planning an online video service targeted at cost-conscious “cord-cutters,” people who have dropped their pay-TV subscriptions, and “cord-nevers” who are younger and have never subscribed to pay TV.

Mr. Ergen said he still thinks Dish will release the service by the end of the year, for around $30 a month, or a “dollar a day.” He said it would be aimed at apartment-dwellers in urban areas.

Mr. Ergen says he sees the day when different cable and satellite operators carry varied groups of channels, rather than carrying almost identical lineups at ever-rising consumer rates.

Noting the recent decisions of small cable operators to drop Viacom Inc.’s channels permanently, he said, “I think there’s going to be more diversity, particularly when you can get cartoons from Netflix and news from the Internet and TV shows a week later” after airing.

So you WANT to watch commercials?

It used to be this way on Expressvu (now Bell), but it ended several years ago. Now, with the exception of Quebec, they have three packages, Good, Better and Best, which are the Bell versions of AT120, 200 and 250. In Quebec, they offer a form of A-La-Carte, where they offer you packages of 30 or 50 channels, where you get to pick the channels from a pre-selected list, which doesn't include sports channel that many consider must haves, like TSN. At the end of the day, there's not much difference in cost between Quebec and the rest of the country and ultimately here.

Just as Dish, Direct TV, VERIZON, Sony ,Google and others are starting offer smaller more focused bundles, the Canadians as most of the rest of the world has already made the leap, Would love to see NuTV make these 4 channel mini add on bundles available.

the issue is it doesnt work that way. They have more than one bundle per item. Look at the Shaw Direct site

Example. Lets say ESPN & ESPN2 are in 1 bundle. Want ESPNU? thats another bundle

here are real examples of Shaw Direct
-CNBC, CNN, History & HLN is in one bundle but MSNBC, Fox News and Bloomberg are in another
-History is in one bundle, A&E is in another
-Sports has 2 bundles (sports and more sports) yet Fight Network and NBA TV aren't in either (they are in a different bundle)
-you've got 2 stations (Spike and Much) in TWO different bundles

and considering their BASIC package (to add ANYTHING) is $56 and bundles are $5 each
They have a package called Digital Favourites which has most of the "cable type" channels and its 72.99. So for $16 you get like 100 extra channels

What is the cost for cable service in Canada?
a helluva lot more than in the states. Shaw Direct is $56 to START
Typical cable rates are around $35-$40 just for lifeline (but lifeline in Canada usually includes either TSN or Sportsnet which would be like ESPN or Fox Sports Net in the states)

yeah sure at $5 a piece on top of a $56 START price!

Do you actually do research before pulling this stuff out of your ass? Or are you one of those that sees "oh 2.49 for a channel. Thats cool" and doesnt see the base price of $50 or more to begin with. You're not really saving a lot of money. And YES I DID have both Bell and Shaw at one time

So if Google wants to bring fiber to my door tv & internet for $70 a month and waive the connection fees bring them on!!! Where do I sign? I'm sure many of my neighbors in this town of 1K would be interested also. I need the Top 250 package to satisfy the 5 sets of eyes in this house and I need it available on 5 TVs too. I've been a fool paying Dish & my phone company $250 a month for that same privilege all this time.

Sounds like what I would love to see on American tv. IF Sat and Cable offered mini bundles like this they could get a lot more use out of the existing model. Without more ala cart and freedom to choose to NOT add sports, etc, if they don't want it, there will be no customer choice and the present system will implode.

Don't fight it, Ergen knows its coming, Dish preparing with its first small bundle rollout, NuTV. many, many veteran and new entrants also will be offering these new smaller (cheaper more focused packages). please read what Ergen has to say.

Pricing will only get better as more and more and more new companies/ new products like NuTV challenge the OLD GAURD.

Sports nuts like me will have to start toting the note (as we should) it will speed the great implosion that we all know is coming. HARBOUGH HIRED FOR 8 MILLION PLUS PER YEAR! Looks like the new Canadian small sports packages are 13-18 bucks.

Don't forget the average viewer only actually watches 20 or fewer channels, the overbloated bundle model is on its way out.
