We all talk about D10,D11,and now maybe D12 Satellites for D* , But what Satellites do cable companys use and how do they work to provide so many channels to customers all over the Usa? How are the satellites different then the ones D* uses?

Do some digging around Lyngsat.com. Look at the 4 digit frequencies, this is C-Band, where most of the master feeds are.
Yep, as long as you had the proper receiver and it was authorized to receive the programming.
From what little I know, they used to sell packages like cable / sat companies years ago, but many less stations. Essentially you bought from a distributor, just like now. I'm not aware of many channels that sold their signal directly to customers, but there were a few.
These days, it is pretty much intended for distributing to the cable / sat companies or for getting feeds from oe place to another.

There are still C-band packages available, but channel selection is very limited compared with the small dish services. Google "C-band TV" and you'll find some providers.
They do have some channels that are not on the small dishes at all, however.
