I am leaning toward getting directv installed in my new house, but have a DVR issue.

Since I do not have HD it sounds like if I get a DVR through Directv it will be the R15. However, I would like to avoid the growing pains associated with the R15.

The only other option I see is to buy a Tivo unit myself. Are there other options?

go get an r10

check your local retailer (best buy or circuit city maybe?) you might get it at a discount especially for new customer.

I'm 2 weeks into my foray back into D* land, and my R15 is awaiting a shipping label already. My Series 2 SD Tivo should be here Friday and my basic D* Box should be here soon after, then I can finally have a workable DVR system, I'm willing to forego the 2 Tuners for a system that doesn't freeze up on me daily.

Get the R10 in place of a standalone Tivo
