A former Miami football booster charged with running a Ponzi scheme claims the Hurricanes' program is guilty of major NCAA violations involving at least 100 former players over the past decade.

Nevin Shapiro told The Miami Herald he has put his allegations into a "tell-all" book titled "The Real U: 2001 to 2010. Inside the Eye of the Hurricane". He said he will provide details once the work is published.

"I want to make the average fan aware of what really exists under that uniform," Shapiro told the newspaper. "They might be great players, but they're certainly not great people."

Interesting quotes from DEADSPIN.com:

Shapiro is currently in a New Jersey prison on money laundering and securities fraud charges stemming from his alleged scheme, and would use the book's profits to pay back some of the people he's swindled. But what's the real reason behind his sudden growing a conscience? None of his friends are his friends anymore:

Shapiro told the Herald he feels abandoned by many ex-Hurricanes he befriended, including Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason, New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle and Chicago Bears wide receiver Devin Hester. Shapiro also told the Herald he was close with former Miami recruiting director Clint Hurtt, who now is at Louisville.

"Once the players became pros, they turned their back on me. It made me feel like a used friend," Shapiro was quoted as saying.

Awww, poor fella. He used a bunch of teenagers in the name of a university he didn't even attend and is shocked, shocked that they used him too. Cruel fate strikes again.
LMAO!

The University Of Miami's Jose Canseco Arrives, Shocks No One

This is why SI is in a terminal decline. Sports reporting for people who really hate sports has to be a very tiny niche.

I just find it interesting that we, as a society, have not resorted to guilty until proven innocent.

I am not gonna just wait and see what the facts bring out. But IF you think a MAJOR football university like Miami should eliminate their football program, you better have IMMACULATE notes/books/records of extremely seriously violations that would make what USC has done in the last 6 years look like Sunday school.

I have dealt with enough college programs both professionally and as an assistant head baseball coach to know how coaches do their things.

I dunno. The U does seem pretty bad. Perhaps this guy's onto something. Maybe college football would be better off just eliminating them. I know I wouldn't miss them! :D

It has nothing to do with them being a major program. If they have been in recent trouble, and this turns out to be bad, the death penalty will be an option.

I know we (bama) were worried about that several years ago.

It's just someone's opinion that Miami should drop football. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, right? ;)

Absolutely! Miami has been very clean for a while. Butch Davis went out of his way to keep it clean. And so has Randy Shannon. Hence the dismal records due to getting better quality students than just athletes. I do not think is a completely clean program anywhere in the country. BUT, with that said, when you are looking for the death penalty....you better have the proof....undesputable proof, to back the claim. NOT because you dislike them.

I am curious. You say they seem pretty bad, do you know of something recent and bad enough to merit the equivalent of the death penalty?

This is ridiculous to think that a program (Miami or not) would be asked to close thier doors. (Football wise)

I think this is a LONG ways from closing the doors.
First of all, if very bad things were happening, it would be a NCAA sanctioned penalty, not a school closing it's doors.

USC is a long ways from being a Model School of late and they are not expecting them to Close thier doors.

I do not think that Miami will have to shut down the program, but I do think that the NCAA is wanting to make a statement with one of the big programs. Yes, they got Bama a few years ago, and yes, they have Fla State and USC now, but I think they are still hungry.

It will happen to someone, just probably not Miami, and probably not right now.

Thank God my school (tOSU) runs a squeaky clean program under The Vest! Now that's a school that I can be proud of! :D

Having the star on a national championship team go to jail for 3 years for armed robbery is not exactly squeaky clean.

BTW, I thought you went to Kent St.?

So you think. There is no such thing. There is NO WAY a coaching staff or the athletic admin can keep tabs of over 50+ players, their alum and boosters. IF ANYONE thinks there is a completely "squeeky clean" program, they must seriously stop drinking the cool aid. WAY too much money involved.

You forgot West Virginia, weren't they caught for some serious stuff or is that still under investigation?

I think the armed robbery was after he left Ohio State. But he did get kicked out for a false police report or something like that. I think I also remember taking a ton of money from boosters. So clean, they were not. But this proves my point, YES, a head HAS to know what his star player is doing all the time, but there is just no way you can keep track of every single aspect of all 50+ players lives 24/7.

Maybe programs shoudn't bring in bad apples to begin with? Then the likely hood they get in trouble and disgrace the school will be less.
