If i got a Directv HD unit and hook it up to my analog tv - will I be able to get and watch HD or do I need a HD tv?

You should be able to watch the HD broadcasts in SD via an s-video or RCA connection. It will be the best SD you probably have ever seen, but it won't be HD.

if you are planning on gettin an hd set in the near future, go for it. if not, pass on it.

I have an H10 receiver hooked up to both a HD set in my bedroom and a SD set in my computer room. Since the H10 has no coax output, I used the RCA AV lines into an RF modulator then a coax run from the modulator out to the SD TV in the other room. The H10 also has an RF remote, so I am able to change the channels from either room. The PQ on the SD set is excellent.
