Windows 8.1 upgrade, your antivirus vs Defender

I upgraded to windows 8.1. I got an error message today. Something about avast not starting and defender taking over.

After some research I found out that Windows 8 comes with Defender. Windows 8 defender is not just for malware, it is also an antivirus. When you install an antivirus windows disables defender.

I ran the avast cleanup tool and then reinstalled avast. I had some performance issues until I restarted my computer after installing avast. I'm guessing the restart disabled defender. If anyone else runs into issues I can go into more detail.

Are you having issues with your antivirus after an upgrade to Windows 8.1?

My guess is that installing the Windows 8.1 upgrade disabled avast and enabled defender.

Last I read MS is recommending you have protection other than just defender, which makes me said because the really lean MSE has been all I've used for years.
